HC Davos Dynamo: A Brief History (S1-S19)

The HC Davos Dynamo were not an original team in the VHL despite their storied history. They came into the VHL known as the Amstel Tigers for a short period of 1 season before being moved to Russia to become the Avangard Havoc from Season 2 to Season 10 before finally finding a home in Switzerland to become the Dynamo we know and love today. If you haven't noticed, Amstel isn't a real place but a river in the Netherlands and Avangard isn't a real place in Russia but was meant to be Omsk but back then the VHL wasn't very bright with it's places. That is why we moved from Avanfard to Davos for the realism and the fact that it is a real place.

 

VHL Championships

The Amstel Tigers/Avangard Havoc/HC Davos Dynamo franchise had won 3 Continental Cups from Season 1 to Season 19 with 1 coming in this made up place in Russia and 2 coming in Switzerland. Avangard took home the Season 7 Championship then 1 season after moving to Switzerland, the Dynamo took home the Season 11 Championship and followed that up with the Season 13 Championship making it 2 in 4 seasons in Switzerland. However, the team wouldn't win another one in the following 6 seasons.

The Avangard/Davos team's that won the championships from S7 to S13 had some of the VHL's best. Terence Fong is still kicking it today in the VHL as a player agent, Christian Stolzschweiger has the RotY trophy named after him, Josh Vetiquan was a 1 OA pick, Brad Janssen is one of the VHL's most decorated players and finally Danny Tremblay is one of the most underrated defenseman in VHL history. Jack O'Reilly is one of the best GM's in VHL history now and has the VHLM Top GM award named after him, Jonathan Matthias was a great player in his own right, Zach Arce is a another great player, Tomas Jenskovic is a VHL HoFer and Benoit Devereux is a VHL HoFer and has the VHLM Top Goalie Trophy named after him. So it is safe to say, these teams were pretty loaded and these names might not mean much to today's VHL but to the older members, this will bring back great memories.

Unfortunately, there are no records which are available to break down the teams for the first 19 Seasons in the VHL for any of the teams which is a crying shame.

 

Awards

Victory Cup (Best Regular Season Record) - 3 Times

S7 - Avangard Havoc - 57-11-4, 118 Points

S11 - HC Davos Dynamo - 59-7-6, 124 Points

S13 - HC Davos Dynamo - 59-10-3, 121 Points

 

The Dynamo/Havoc have won the Victory Cup as the team with the best Best Regular Season Record a total of 3 times with an average of 121 points and 58.3 wins per season.

 

Terence Fong Trophy (European Conference Champions) - 4 times

S7, S11, S13, S19

 

The Dynamo won the Euro 3 times winning the Championship 2 of the 3 times while also winning in S7 as the Havoc.

S11 - Jonathan Matthias - 61 G | 76 A | 137 P | +83

The Scotty Campbell Trophy called Davos home for 4 straight seasons as Matthias, Arce x2 and Jenskovic won the trophy from S11 to S14.

 

Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding Player, as voted on by the members) - 4 Times

S11 - Jonathan Matthias - 34 Votes

S12 - Zach Arce - 29 Votes

S13 - Zach Arce - 31 Votes

S14 - Tomas Jenskovic - 21 Votes

 

Again, like the Campbell Trophy, the Slobodzian Trophy also came home with those 3 players in 4 consecutive seasons.

 

Daisuke Kanou Trophy (Playoff MVP) - 3 Times

S11 - Benoit Devereux - 8 W | 3 L | 2 OTL | 2.34 G.A.A | .940 SV%

The Kanou was won in the same seasons that the Dynamo won the championships as Stolzy won with his effort in S7, Devereux shut the door in S11 and Jenskovic carried the defense and offense in S13.

 

Mike Szatkowski Trophy (Top Point Scorer) - 4 Times

S11 - Jonathan Matthias - 137 Points

S12 - Zach Arce - 125 Points

S13 - Zach Arce - 133 Points

S14 - Tomas Jenskovic - 112 Points

 

Much like the Campbell and Slobo Trophies, the Szatkowski came to Davos in 4 consecutive seasons with Matthas, Arce and Jenskovic.

 

 Kevin Brooks Trophy (Top Goal Scorer) - 4 Times

S11 - Jonathan Matthias - 61 Goals

S13 - Matt Bentz - 58 Goals

S16 - Leander Kaelin - 55 Goals

S19 - Marek Schultz - 58 Goals

 

The Brooks Trophy came to Davos on 4 different occasions. S11 Matthias took the trophy home with 61 goals, in S13, Bentz too it home with his 58, S16 counts a bit as Kaelin started the season in Davos before ending the season in Toronto. Finally, S19 had Marek Schultz win with 58 goals. 

 

Alexander Beketov Trophy (Top Assists) - 3 Times

S12 - Tomas Jenskovic - 80 Assists

S13 - Zach Arce - 85 Assists

S14 - Tomas Jenskovic - 78 Assists

 

3 Seasons in a row the Beketov had gone to Davos with Jenskovic winning in S12/S14 with Zach Arce sandwiched in the middle.

 

Sterling Labatte Trophy (Top Defenseman) - 5 Times

S3 - Petr Shirokov - 34 G | 68 A | 102 P | +38 | 118 H | 147 SB

S11 - Jochen Walser - 30 G | 79 A | 109 P | +85 | 84 H | 125 SB

The Labatte Trophy was won 5 times and 4 years in a row by a Davos player. S3 had Shirokov win the Labatte for Avangard while Walser won in S11 with Jenskovic winning 3 straight seasons from S12 to S14.

Devereux goes down as one of the best goalies of his generation and on the Shaw 2 years in a row and one more time in Season 10.

S16 - Leander Kaelin - 55 G | 56 A | 111 P | +47 | 291 H | 44 SB

Schultz is the only winner in Davos history of the Boulet and he won it in Season 19.

 

Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy (Top Rookie) - 2 Times

No Davos player has won the Stolzy as top rookie from S11-S19. However, Ray Funk won in S3 as the 2nd ever winning played for Avangard and then Devereux won in their last season in S10 to round out the Avangard era.

 

David Knight Trophy (Top GM) - 3 Times

S1 - Matt Cornell

S11 - Scotty Campbell

S19 - Chad Murphy

 

Scotty Campbell won the Top GM Trophy in his first Season in Switzerland with Chad Murphy winning 8 Seasons later. Matt Cornell of Amstel won the first ever Top GM award.

 

Grimm Jonsson Trophy (Top Leader) - 1 Time

S5 - Patrice Reynaud

 

No Davos player has won the Grimm as Top Leader from S11-S19. However, S5, had Reynaud win the Top Leader of Avangard.

 

Mikka Virkkunen Trophy (Most Sportsmanlike Player) - 1 Time

S14 - Fayt Leingod

 

Only 1 time in Davos history has a player won the Top Pussy Trophy and that was Leingod in S14.

The Dynamo have a pretty good award cabinet with 50 Trophies and that includes the Amstel/Avangard Days. They currently rank a little behind the Wranglers who have 71 trophies in the first 19 seasons. The Dynamo average 2.63 trophies per season so far.

the powers that be in the VHL back in 2007 to about 2009 weren't very smart lol. I'm pretty sure it was named after Avangard Omsk with people thinking the city was Avangard rather than Omsk
