Calgary Wranglers: Season 21

Recommended Posts

The last we checked, the Calgary Wranglers were in the middle of a mini rebuild. The team had finished with just 37 points leaving them 3rd in their conference. Does it get better in Season 21? Does it get worse? Or is it more of the same? Let's find out.

GM: Jardy Bunclewirth

Record (after S20): 144 GP | 42 W | 96 L | 6 OTL | 90 P | 556 GF | 779 GA

Playoff Record (after S20): N/A

Season 20 Draft

Round 1, Pick 2 (From Toronto, via Madrid): Kevyn Hesje

Round 1, Pick 4 (via Helsinki): Lars Intranquilo

Round 1, Pick 6 (via Riga): Alejandro Messi

Round 3, Pick 20 (via Helsinki): Alex Halestrom

Round 4, Pick 32: Pass

The Wranglers loaded up for this draft after the fire sale that was in Season 20. The Wranglers also traded a bunch of their middle round picks for 1st round picks picking Hesje, Lars and Messi with 3rd overall and 5th overall sandwiched between them. These three players never went on to have HoF career but they certainly went on to have some solid careers save for Messi who was a bust. Halestrom was a depth piece and nothing more.

Season 21 Regular Season - 72 GP | 25 W | 44 L | 3 OTL | 53 P | 250 GF | 298 GA

The Wranglers improved by 8 wins and 16 points from Season 20 while also cutting down goals against by 190. It was a move in the right direction for the Wranglers as they are making strides in the rebuild. However, the team still finished in 3rd place within the North American Conference. The Wranglers improved to 6th overall in the 8 team VHL but missed the playoffs by 54 points.

Jardy Bunclewirth continued to show why he is one of the best players in the league despite not playing on a strong team. He scored 59 goals and assisted on 77 goals for 136 points. Mathias Chouinard was the only other Wrangler to break 100 points with 118 of his own and Roman Andreev had a strong showing with 92 points. Gabriel Cedarland was the other forward from Season 20 still on the team and he had scored just 50 points this season following a 83 point season in S20. Newcomer Robin Big Snake had scored 54 points in his debut season with the team.

Rookies Jon Cruze and Lars Intranquilo had good seasons for rookie defenseman with 84 and 58 points. While in net, Alejandro Messi had a better season than Henning the season before with a 21-37-3 record with a 0.888 save percentage and a 3.81 G.A.A including 2 shutouts.

Trades:

Not available until Season 35

Awards:

Season 21 Mike Szatkowski Trophy Winner (Jardy Bunclewirth)

Season 21 Christian Stolzscweiger Trophy Winner (Jon Cruze)

The Wranglers were able to win two trophies this season to add to their vast trophy case bringing the running total to 73. The Szatkowski Trophy found it's way back to Calgary as Jardy won with his 136 points while Jon Cruze the defenseman, won with his 84 points from the back end as a rookie.

Overall:

The Calgary Wranglers improved from the last Season, however, the team still seems to be missing a few parts from competing for a playoff spot. Jardy is a fine player and his play doesn't deter despite not that much help. Chouinard seems like a keeper as well. Andreev regressed a bit from his huge S20 season. Cruze and Lars seem like solid building blocks on defense but still need more help. Messi was a huge improvement from Henning but tbh a CPU goalie would be a improvement. Overall, Bunclewirth over 2 seasons has carried this team as he is the new points leader with 266 points. Mathias Chouinard and Roman Andreev also break 200 career points while Cedarland is just 12 points behind Gunnarsson. Messi takes over the wins leader with his 21 over 13 as well as shutouts and overall better stats. How do things shake out in Season 22 for the Wranglers? find out next week.

There was a time before Bush? ?

There was a lot of time before Bush was GM of Calgary. He was GM of a lot of teams actually. Jardy's last season as GM of Calgary was S25. Starting in S26, and continuing on through S41, the next GM of Calgary was me. It was the record for longest GMing tenure until Banana broke it with Seattle a season or two ago
