Season 21 VHL Entry Draft

Round 1, Pick 3: Evgeny Fyodorov

Round 2, Pick 10: Drew Hamilton

Round 2, Pick 16 (From Davos): S.J Stafford

Round 3, Pick 20 (From Helsinki): Pass

Round 4, Pick 26: Pass

This draft was not a very strong one outside of maybe 5 picks. Fyodorov was a solid pick but not at number 3. The rest of Wranglers draft was nothing to write home about.

Season 22 Regular Season - 72 GP | 44 W | 20 L | 8 OTL | 96 P | 241 GF | 192 GA

The Wranglers took another step forward this season winning 44 games which was 19 more games than in Season 21. So as you can see the rebuild from Season 20 to now is starting to pay off as the last two seasons of missing the playoffs have began to bear fruit quickly. Mathias Chouinard is quickly becoming a top player in the league as he led the Wranglers in scoring with 97 points this season. 3rd overall pick, Fyodorov came in a scored 44 goals and had 91 points in his rookie season. Old man Jardy had himself another good season but was way down from his 136 point season in S21. Andreev rounds out the top 4 forwards with a 81 point season.

The Wranglers made a huge trade in the offseason to boost the defense line. Dante Terragni came in a led the dline in scoring with 79 points. Jon Cruze matched him with 79 points of his own. Intranquilo was the opposite of these two as he puts up some decent numbers but he is the stay at home defender compared to these two free wheeling defenders. Joey Clarence also came over in the huge deal and shored up the goalie position. Joey posted a 44-14-7 record with a .920 save percentage and a 2.22 G.A.A and 5 shutouts.

Season 22 Playoffs - 7 GP | 3 W | 4 L | 0 OTL | lost to Toronto Legion

The Wranglers would meet up with the Legion in the first round of the playoffs. The Legion finished a whopping 30 points ahead of the Wranglers so this wasn't expected to be that close of a series. Well when the Wranglers won Game 1 with a 40 save shutout from Joey Clarence and goals from Robin Big Snake and Lars Intranquilo, these players didn't score much this season, Toronto fans were just saying its just one game. Game 2 saw Calgary win again with a Roman Andreev hattrick and Clarence shutting the door once again, Toronto and their fans must be getting nervous going to Calgary down 2-0 in the series. Toronto ended up winning game 3 by a 4-2 score. Big Snake scored his 2nd goal of the series and Chouinard picked up goal 1. Game 4 saw something we weren't expecting. Another shutout for Clarence, Chouinard scored 2 goals and Andreev added another one. Game 5 back in Toronto had everyone buzzing but a 2-1 Legion win kept the Wrangler fans quite for now. Fyodorov added the only Calgary goal. Game 6, everyone though this was the end of the road for the Legion as game 6 in Calgary but the Wranglers couldn't score a single goal and ended up shutout. It all comes down to game 7, winner takes all, the Wranglers blew a 3-1 series lead but that can all be forgotten about if they win game 7. It was hard fought but a 4-3 loss ended the Wranglers season. Roman Andreev, Dante Terragni and Evgeni Fyodorov scored but it was all for naught.

Mathias Chouinard and Roman Andreev had awesome playoff stats with 8 and 7 points each and were the only players with over 1 PPG. Clarence had himself a playoff to remember with a .940 save percentage and a 1.87 G.A.A. Jardy disappointed with just 5 assists and no goals.

Trades:

Not available until Season 35

Awards:

Season 22 Sterling Labatte Trophy Winner (Dante Terragni)

Season 22 Christian Stolzscweiger Trophy Winner (Evgeny Fyodorov)

Calgary adds two more trophies to the case bringing it up to 75 trophies now with the Labatte and another Stolzy being added.

Overall:

The Wranglers fast tracked rebuild came to an end in Season 22 as the team made the playoffs after making two moves to make themselves a lot better. Dante Terragni came in and won the Labatte and shored up the defense. Clarence came in and brought stability in the net and almost upset the Legion by himself. Bunclewirth is still the man to beat on the career stats board with 155 goal, 197 assists and 352 points which leads all players since S20 on the Wranglers. Mathias Chouinard is the only other player to break 300 points in that time. Roman Andreev sits at 3 with 284 points. Jon Cruze is the top scoring defenseman with 163 points. Clarence becomes the 3rd goalie in 3 seasons to make the list and he is the winningest one already with his one season of 44 wins. He tops all goalies in all categories.

Review:

Great historical piece. I'm glad we still have the ability to look back at these older seasons. This was well-researched and read very easily. Beautifully presented. The headings in colour are enough to make it looks great without needing pictures. I remember the deals that took Clarence and Terrangi to CAL from SEA. Our cup runs were over and that's when I moved to Toronto to play with my brother. Very riveting read and I look forward to more in this series!
