Midnite 69
Ricky Johnson Age: 21 Height: 5’10 Weight: 200 Ibs. Team: Minnesota Storm Position: Defense man Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario Handedness: Right The Canadian born, Ricky Johnson, joined the Minnesota Storm part way through the season in hopes to leave his mark within the VHLM. Although Johnson had limited games to display his skills, it didn’t take long for scouts to notify Johnson as a potential draftee to the VHL. Johnson has already distinguished himself as a promising defenseman and, although still improving, has already displayed a talent to potentially be a future top prospect. Scouting Report Projectable Skills: Defense Naturally being a defense man, Johnson has already shown he’s capable of tracking down the puck as well as keeping it out of their defensive zone. During his first VHLM season, he illustrated his efforts on defense by having a total of 26 shots in 13 games which is equivalent to about 2 blocked shots a game. His efforts would result in games being either won or very close losses. His hit total of 25 also signifies that he would give his opposition a very hard time with minimal leeway within his defensive zone. Passing Although his primary focus is on the defensive end, Johnson has portrayed flashes of brilliance on the offensive end with his passing. Of his 9 points in his first season, 7 of them were assists which were all provided within 13 games. Having such a small sample wouldn’t mean much, but the takeaway from it shows Johnson’s unique ability to find his teammates in the open slots. Discipline With having to hound down loose pucks and preventing the puck from entering the your net, Johnson has shown extreme discipline of clean defensive play. Within his 13 games, he had about a total of 12 minutes in the penalty box. Considering that’s less than a minute per game with being on the first line shows he’s capable of staying on the ice when needed. Improvement Areas: Offensive Abilities Outside of passing, Johnson has shown very limited abilities in terms of what he’s capable of on the offensive side of the ice. During his first season, he was only capable of scoring 2 goals while taking 24 shots. Being a defenseman it’s unlikely you’ll see his name within the scoring column, but in most cases well developed defensemen can shoot it in the back of the net while Johnson struggles to do so. He’s not the player you’d want taking your penalty shots or face-offs either as he’s shown that the areas are not his strongest. Puck Handling Johnson has shown promise that he’s capable of bringing the puck down the ice, but hasn’t displayed the ability to keep it under control when pressured. This could be a primary reason for his poor +/- average of -3 during the season as he’ll force his way out of a situation leading to a turnover. His sloppy handling of the puck will his most critical issue that he’ll need to fix in order to isolate himself as a notable defenseman. Strength Despite his mass, being a shorter defense can put him in a disadvantage to those who tower over him. This resulting in easy blow byes and could also be linked to his poor ability to handle the puck when given the opportunity. His lack of strength would also result in not being able to shrug off hits from the opposition which could lead to many things from increased fatigue and inability to play at his full potential. It’ll be interesting to see how Johnson grows as he improves on the player he is today. ConnorMcdavid 180
Review: This Rookie Profile is well done overall. It’s clean, nicely laid out, and is informative to the type of player build you are going for. The read was a bit difficult as some of the sentences were jumpy a bit though this is a more minor thing that can be worked on with practise. Overall, good job! HenrikZoiderberg 469
Review 2: Picture, summary, formatting and word count all check out. I generally reccomend a conclusion paragraph at the bottom of the profile to tie it all together. Word count is good at 600+ On 6/28/2019 at 4:23 PM, Midnite said: Defense man One word, not two. Do you mean he blocked a total of 26 instead of having? This may be a language thing, @Midnite are you Quebequois or something similar? Not meant as an insult, just when I read this through the phrasing triggers the french part of my brain, not the english part that I default to. Apologies if I got the mother tongue wrong, reach out to me at @HenrikZoiderberg if you'd like me to give your articles an edit if I was right though. I speak both languages and can catch some common gotchas before things go live.
