Obviously Payton had a better overall career, but I  would rank this up there with his surprise retirement announcement back in the day with the Lions.

I'm guessing you mean Barry Sanders. :P

Not that I was around back then for Barry's retirement but I agree with you. The only surprises I can rank up with this one from my 13 years following the NFL are Patrick Willis' retirement and the Giants beating the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Yes my bad for some reason I had either Payton Manning or Walter Payton on my mind as I was reading their wiki pages after Barry haha

It was also brought to my attention that Calvin Johnson and Gronk also retired at 30 and 29, so I guess those might fit under that of a surprise

Calvin was a big surprise as well. With Gronk there was talk of it for a couple offseasons now, he's had so many injuries that it made definite sense. Luck's decision feels entirely out of left field, sounds like he's really committed to not going through another arduous injury recovery process like he did with his shoulder in 2015-17.

Did anyone ever find out the specifics of that mysterious thing that's kept him out of just about everything in recent memory?

Also...Bills defense deserves a lot more credit.

Nope, and it seems like his frustration with that fact is a big reason for his decision.
