ECN Special “1st VHL player from Nereta, Latvia”

This time, we will be looking at Hall of fame inducted player Fredinamijs Krīgars. He was the first to crack the VHL from a small town of Nereta, deep in the countryside of Latvia. The other player hailing from Nereta is none other than John Frostbeard, leading goalscorer of Seattle Bears.

In this article we will be looking how he stacks up with other HoF players from S53 Draft class. We are looking at the draft class that gave VHL 4 HoF players. One of the most legendary and most respected player in the league in Franchise Cornerstone, a quality player and high IQ passer  Lukas Müller,  VHLM Legend, 4 Time VHL Champion, deadly scorer and father of classic liberalism John Locke. All three of them were 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall picks respectively. Interestingly that our hero for today was drafted 11th Overall. A fairly low pick for a player that would turn out to be over 700 Point scorer in only 7 season career in VHL.

Krīgars on All-time list sits at 30th place in the category of Points-per-game rating with 1.46. He also occupies 48th spot on all-time points list. With that one extra season in VHL, Krīgars would have had an opportunity to push himself in the contention of 800 point club. With only 62 point shy of that goal, it would be hard but achievable nonetheless.

One of the most interesting facts that we can see from the career of Fredinamijs Krīgars is the fact that his 2 Continental cups were won with assistance of other Hall of Fame inductees  from S53 Draft class. Firstly, S57 Continental Cup roster included Krīgars and Locke who both had terrific regular season numbers. S58 Continental Cup roster included 3 S53 Draft Class Hall of Fame inductees – Krīgars, Locke and Lukas Müller. Not they needed any more superstar power, but Riga was able to acquire a S54 Draftee and future Hall of Fame goaltender Markus King who was their Number 1 goaltender for both Cup wins. What is important to say, is that Fredinamijs Krīgars was a strong playoff performer as in 36 playoff games in his VHL career he was able to get 52 points and 5 game winning goals. Both S57 and S58 he was leading scorer of VHL

The question that needs an answer is will there ever be anyone else from Latvia to take the crown from Krīgars and be the best Latvian to ever play on VHL ice? We see that there are 3 notable Latvians currently playing in VHL. Randoms, Kallis Kriketers and John Frostbeard. Looking at all three of them, for now it is quite clear that Randoms won’t be receiving any awards and has no chance at making Hall of Fame, John Frostbeard who is still growing and could be a crucial piece of Seattle’s future and Kallis Kriketers, who has showed why he is a truly elite goaltender. Being the best goalie of VHL from S64 to S66 and S63 Continental cup could push him into discussions once his career is over, but for us at ECN, Kallis needs one more outstanding season to show everyone why he is the best goaltender currently in VHL and he is aiming for that Hall of Fame. Will he better than Krīgars? You decide that!
