      Unsung Hero - S69

When I first read that the theme for this season would be Unsung Hero’s I kind of hesitated and started panicking about who I would write this about. As the night went on and I ran through all of the players I know and who I share the ice with it had become abundantly clear who my choice would be. There are many players that would have been good choices to write about. This player however I think deserves some spotlight as he doesn’t seem to get enough of it. He is the heart and soul of the Mississauga Hounds, Jimmy Spyro.

The Stats

I want to start my talking about the stats. He has had an unbelievable season with the Hounds. He has backstopped the Hounds to a 2nd place spot in the standings after 60 games. He is currently 2nd in wins with 45 wins behind only Jacques Lafontaine who leads with 58 wins. His save percentage has dipped a little bit over the Hounds recent slump but still has a respectable .887 percentage. He has an incredible goals against average at 1.97 and has a league leading 8 shutouts! Facing over 1000 shots this season Spyro has proven to be among the elite in goaltending in the VHLM and arguably one of the best goaltenders to ever wear a Hound uniform.

The Person

Putting aside the incredible statistics he has put together this season, there is a young man always beaming with positivity and excitement for the game. He is a very personable and active member in our locker room. He gets along with every player on our roster. Doesn’t matter if we are winning or losing he is always trying to find the silver lining and pick guys up when they are having a bad stretch of games. He can be a little hard on himself but that shows how serious he takes his game. He wants to be the best and if he continues to put in the hard work and sticks with that positive attitude then he will be the best.

The Hard Work

One of the more hardworking was players on our roster. You never have to remind him to do his training for the week. He’s always working and tweaking his training to get better. If goalies could have a letter in the VHLM he could easily have a C or A just because of the example he sets when it comes to being a better player and teammate.

Conclusion

Spyro is the best. He isn’t leading the team in points or goals. He isn’t always one of the three stars. His work on and off the ice however is what makes him an unsung hero on our team. Without a goalie who works as hard as Spyro has then the Hounds would not be where they are in the standings. He recently created a graphic with the captain and the assistant captains. He was apart of that photo and even though he’s not a captain he feels like he belongs with that group of players.

That enough of the tummy sticks with my boy Spyro, it’s time to focus on the final stretch of the regular season and locked up that second spot in the standings. Go Hounds Go!
