Random Thoughts of Fong

What goes into my names?

What exactly goes into making a name for me? Through the various iterations of my name the only real constant has been the attempt to make them an Asian name. But one could surmise that I can just pick any random old Asian name and input it but actually it takes quite a bit more work than that.

I need a name that has some kind of witty connotation to it at times. It just makes it more entertaining and kind of puzzling for me to try and make a series of words form into a name with additional meaning in it. One of the examples I tried to do was Biggu Kyanon. The intention of course was I wanted a player that could shoot and score, so naming it with the phonetic sounds of a “Cannon” and “Big” seemed like an interesting combination. After I found the word meanings I wanted, I actually had to search around to see how the words would fit together to make it sound like an actual name. This process actually required a bit over an hour for this name in particular. For Fook Yu it took substantially less time as I saw the name on Austin Powers.

Why do I like food so much anyways?

People have always asked me what it is about food I like. The answer I feel is fairly simple yet complex at the same time. It’s about history and culture. I feel that eating authentic local foods is like taking a look into the history of the community and region that you are in. Sure sometimes we are bombarded with the fast food chains and modernized fusions of the world, but typically in most places, if you look hard enough you can find some sort of eating that reflects the historical roots of that area you are in. For example take Hong Kong, a place full of Chinese people but due to the British colonies and influences, we have HK or Honger food. Things like pineapple buns, HK style milk tea, having high tea and the evolution of dim sum as a huge past time with certain items is due to the integration of the Chinese culture with the large European presence. What is fascinating in my mind is how complex or simple certain food items in a culture can be, no matter it being expensive or cheap.

What is this fetish with Kpop I have going?

About a year and a half ago, I probably had no care for Kpop nor did I care. But then (blaming my wife) I got immersed in some of their super catchy tunes. Predominantly starting with the girl group TWICE and then the boy band BTS I just started listening to everything and then started seeing everything else in the industry. What fascinates me is that kpop idols are essentially manufactured or trained like one would train an athlete, they audition, they hone their skills and money is spent on production and advertising to a point where its no different than a sports team. Whats more is that they are involved in events that aren’t just music or dancing. We’re talking gameshows, tv shows, random events where they compete against other Kpop idols, things that American music artists hardly ever participate with. Its very intriguing and I think that’s what I kind of enjoy, is that they are like an all in one entertainment package.

What is my next player going to be anyways?

Likely Korean, but I have been musing about making a follow up playing to one of my other players. Right now sitting on some Kpop star-adapted names like Yung Cock (Jungkook) or Me Young (Miyeon) or something along those lines that kind of allows me to keep posting kpop pictures all over the place. Pretty sure it’s going to be a forward though. Though if I could make a follow up- player to XXX or Kanou, I’m not quite sure how I would word their names yet quite yet.

Also I’ve supplied a few pictures here of Jungkook and Soyeon to illustrate them.
