Everyone remembers Arnor Sigurdsson, right? A 9th overall pick by Riga who scored prolifically in the juniors, including a point per game season with the Yukon Rush in S65, Sigurdsson failed to make the jump to the VHL, scoring 67 points across 3 VHL seasons. Arnie, as he's known back in his home country, had just lost his passion. "I wasn't enjoying myself out there anymore, so I retired. I know I was only 21, but I didn't see myself playing anymore." So he moved back to Iceland to coach. Now, Iceland has been a big country on the VHL scene despite being a small nation, boasting a Hall of Famer in Grimm Jonsson as well as current stars Wolf Stansson Jr., Sigard Gunnar, and Bjorn Scoringsonn. Sigurdsson was once seen as the best Iceland had to offer, but he's handing it over to a new prospect that he found while coaching in Iceland: Richard "Big Dick" Penisson. Despite the unfortunate name (and being 5'9"), Penisson is one of the best scorers Iceland has ever produced. "I truly believe Richard is going to be a point-per-game scorer in the VHL one day. The kid's got a fantastic shot that he utilises quite well. He's a fast skater with an eye for goal, and he's a great leader. I coached his Junior A team and he led us to the World Finals, where we beat the Swedes in the gold medal game." Penisson moved to Sweden the next year, making his debut for Skelleftea, Sigurdsson's old SHL club, as a 15-year-old. "Arnor had put a good word in, and I tried out and made the team. They stuck me straight in and I just tried to play my game." Penisson would play in 12 games, scoring 2 goals and assisting 4 for 6 points. He also played in the SuperElit with Skelleftea's U20 team, scoring 60 points in 40 games. But playing in Sweden, despite being a new challenge, wasn't enough for the young Icelander. "Arnor is really close with my family, as we're from the same town. He told me about the VHL, and how he'd made it. I knew then and there that I wanted to come over to North America and try myself there." So, despite declaring late, Penisson will come over to the VHLM and try his luck. "I'm really excited to make the jump to North America. It's going to be fun, that's for sure!" When asked if he wanted any team in particular to draft him, Penisson stayed open. "I really don't care where I play. All I know is that I want TO play. I know Ottawa and Yukon are both top-tier organizations, and they're high on my list, but Philadelphia also intrigues me. There's a lot of franchises, so I really don't care." When asked about his style of play, Penisson simply replied, "I score. I can do some stickhandling, I'm fairly strong, and I can hit if needed, but all I like to do is score. No doubt about it. Not a passer, probably will never be one. I just love to score." Watch out for Big Dick, cause he'll score on you any day.
