Werbenjagermanjensen Is Getting Old

 

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - It's the end of another season...another season without a Continental Cup. Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen has gotten used to this. After falling to the Riga Reign in the European Conference Championship, the team is now moving to the off-season. At this point, Smitty has his own routine. First, he goes around and say goodbye to his teammates, the coaches, and then the support staff.

 

"At the end of the season, it's important to take a moment and catch up with everyone. As much as we'd like to "run it back" every season, we have to also remember that sports is a business. For one reason or another, there might be a player or two that aren't back next season...or maybe even I won't be back! It's important though not to forget the support staff. I wouldn't be able to play as well as I do if it wasn't for the trainers, equipment managers, media managers, cafeteria staff, and all the other behind the scenes people. Without them, we'd all be lost."

 

Afterwards comes the locker clean out. It's amazing how much clutter builds up over the course of a 72 game season. That's all gotta go. Then, it's the last item on the agenda - a final meeting with the front office, followed by a final press conference with the media. Sources say that the meeting with the front office was longer than usual this off-season, and that makes sense considering Smitty is going into the last year of his contract. With the high likelihood that Werbenjagermanjensen will be winning his second consecutive Labette trophy, the veteran defenseman would be a highly sought after free agent. Sources indicate that the meeting went well and that Smitty is enjoying his time in Moscow, but he's just not quite ready to put his signature on the dotted line for a new contract.

 

There is a new problem plaguing Smitty that he has not had to deal with in the past. Quite simply, he's old...or at least getting there. While chuckling, Werbenjagermanjensen added "yeah, that's something that I heard the old veterans talk about before, but I didn't quite believe them. Now though, it's a different story. I'm getting old, and I feel it a little bit more than I did in the past. I'm going to have to work harder this year to get back to where I was. I could feel some of my skill slipping away, so I'm just going to have to keep my nose to the grind to make sure I stay in top shape. Also means no more Chick-Fil-A! I cleaned up my eating habits during the season and was amazed at how much better I felt. Not that I ate badly before, but cutting out the chick-fil-a number 1 entrees, the McDonalds number 10s, etc... really made me feel better."

 

Smitty has indicated that he'll be training in the off-season with Gritty, as an accountability buddy. The two have connections off the ice, so it makes sense for the teammates to continue their work together during the off-season. Who knows - maybe some of Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen's greatness will rub off on Gritty!

I've been to KOP. I was unaware of this Mission BBQ when I was there
