Hextall talks trade from Davos to Toronto

Reporter: Once again thank you for taking the time to talk with us about the trade Jaxx. Now this was a big trade, lots of players going to Toronto and a lot of picks going to Davos, what has it been like for you?

 

Hextall: Always happy to sit down and share my thoughts, like to let people know what I'm thinking so thank you for having me. But this was a big trade and I'm glad I'm a part of it. I said in a earlier interview the Legion were my favorite team during my childhood so really a childhood dream of mine is coming true, and I look to give the team everything I have when I finally get to start playing for them.

 

reporter: Always nice when a dream like that comes true for a player. Now a poll on the VHL site shows that more people think Davos won this trade, any thoughts?

 

Hextall: Something I've learned from watching "The Hockey Guy" on youtube is that you really can't say who the winner is of these kind of trades till a few seasons down the lines. We have to see how Davos uses those picks, who they pick up, and if those players will be busts or hall of fame worthy. We also don't know how deep that draft will be yet. I understand why people think Davos has won the trade but I think for right now Toronto has won it because he's already getting a team together, he's already rebuilding or retooling the team, however you view it. I think in 1,2 or 3 seasons Toronto will be very dangerous again. But again I don't believe we'll truly know who won this trade till maybe season 74, there's just so much to consider.

 

reporter: I see, maybe when we get to that season we could have a follow up and talk about this trade again. One more question, as I'm sure much of the league knows, Toronto recently went through a GM change and Peace is the new GM. He is moving up from the VHLM where he lead the Saskatoon Wild to the championship and won, and in the 2nd round you were the goalie of the Halifax 21st that had to face that dominating team. How does it feel to be traded for by him?

 

Hextall: oh it's weird, kinda felt awkward in some ways, but I also feel honored to. I think it would be easy for him to look at any team he faced in the playoffs and say their all trash because of just how good his team was, but clearly he was paying attention and realized who the talented players were on each team....... and maybe he felt a little bad for me to, seeing all those shots I had to face. Peace already talked in a post not to long ago about his thoughts and views on the trade he made, and I'm sure he wanted Jacques Lafontaine but knew he wouldn't be able to get him, and having that experience of seeing me play in the playoffs he trusted that I could be just as good as Jacques, and really that's my goal. I wanna exceed any expectations he had for me. I want to be a franchise goaltender for this team.
