Last season was certainly a rebuild for Davos, but there was one surprise.  Samuel Ross returned to the ice and played rather well for Dynamo, finishing the season with a career high .908 save percentage.  The real question is “where did he go?”  We caught up with Ross before the end of the year and got an exclusive look at the whole situation.

“It was a rough year for Davos and that kind of took a toll on me.  Everyone knew it was going to be a rebuilding type of year and I saw my team mates getting traded and it wore on me.  I was wondering if it was even worth it to play anymore.  Hockey has been my life for a while, but this season just left something to be desired.  I don’t know what it is, but something was missing.  I had to get that worked out.”

We also asked him about 2 seasons ago and being a rookie with Davos.  “You know, it was funny because there was all this excitement about getting drafted and I just kind of sat there the whole season.  I understand why. We were chasing a championship, trying to restore Davos or maybe bring it to a place it hasn’t been, there’s just not a lot of wiggle room to let a rookie goaltender play.”

Did Ross regret declaring for the VHL instead of staying down?  “No, I mean I was stuck in a difficult spot.  I was playing well, I had a lot of interest from owners in the minors but I didn’t want to take a spot away from the younger guys.  I don’t regret it one bit.  Also, I wouldn’t have been back with Ottawa and if I was going into a new locker room it might as well be in the big leagues.”

Now back to the burning question, what happened to Samuel Ross?  “Last season was tough, as y’all know I lost a friend, and I wasn’t getting a lot of playing time, and I just got overwhelmed.  I just needed to sort things out.  I checked myself in to a clinic, got some rest, advice, relaxation and all that jazz.  It helped me re-focus.”

So why did he come back? Was it money? Fame?  Ross says, “I saw Finn got traded and I knew I had to pick myself up and get back to work.  It’s been a slow road to recovery, but it’s not fair for guys to be out working and not having someone dependable to stop the puck.  It’s amazing what some rest and re-focusing can do.”

What does Sam think about his season? “I’m shocked, really.  To come back and play the way I have, putting up career numbers after so much time off, it’s just strange.  Hopefully next season I can build off of it and be even better.  My glove feels quicker, my focus is there, my skating actually feels comfortable for the first time in my career.  Also, as odd as it sounds, I think my vision is better.  I feel like I may be entering my stride as a VHL tender.”

There’s your answer.  Samuel Ross is back and looking forward to playing better than ever for a rebuilding Davos squad.
