Season Trends: Moscow Offense Firing on All Cylinders (Again)

Recommended Posts

Moscow, Russia – As we reach the two-thirds mark on Season 70’s regular season, some clear trends have emerged – the most prominent being the continuing dominance of the Moscow Menace offense. After finishing with the third-most goals for and the worst goals against of the top seven finishers last season, Moscow has apparently rounded their team out significantly in the off-season. They now lead the league in goals for (164, on pace for 246) and are tied for fourth in goals allowed (120, on pace for 180), a difference that currently grants them the best goal differential and record in the league.

What may be most impressive about this run so far is the personnel with which they’ve accomplished this task. A staunch (on-paper) defense – Smitty and Vladimir, the latter of whom recently signed an extension – are first and third in points scored among defensemen, and it isn’t even close for Smitty (55 vs. 49 and 47 for Helsinki’s Fontenette and Pavlov, respectively). While they don’t fare quite as nicely in terms of defensive volume stats like hits and shot blocks, they’re among the better plus-minus players in the league.

The Menace have managed to squeeze out a league-leading offense with a few on the back half of their career (Randoms, Jet Jaguar, Gritty, Bailie, Tocco) and a collection of younger players in winger Foilen and center Nate Telker. The points are both generous and incredibly evenly spread: Moscow currently owns six of the top ten points spots in the league, five of which are their veteran forwards. Will this fast-paced offense be able to continue its pace for the rest of the season?

After Season 70 made zero 100-point scorers in a season a reality, Moscow is firing back in kind.
