Latvia, Riga - After breaking a lengthy 7-game losing streak, the Riga Reign should have had some motivation to celebrate. Instead, their recent seasons' worth of success made this slide all the more excruciating as they saw their position in the standings drop. The once considerable advantage they held over New York and Seattle in fact reversed, and they find themselves with just a six point buffer from a playoff position going into the last ten games of the season, as Malmo's recent hot streak has propelled them to 62 points to Riga's 68.

"It's been a terrible stretch," veteran defender Apollo Hackett remarked at the Helsinki post-game presser, "and we're better than this, I'm sure. There is certainly some degree of waxing and waning from the North American and European conferences, respectively, but we have all the personnel and resources we need to be successful."

Many analysts rightly suggested that Riga would be in a bit of a pinch this season, as they would be losing much of their firepower to old age and inevitable retirement. Forward Elias Dahlberg shocked the league by announcing a (slightly) early retirement last season, though his agency quickly picked up on a promising Kyl Offerson in the interim. In a similar vein, Seattle finds themselves in a (now-relenting) slump after two consecutive championship seasons, and are a far cry in the standings from their NA rivals in Vancouver and halfway across the world in Moscow. With the league hierarchy shaken up, will Riga and Seattle opt for some changes this off-season or try to stay the course and compete with what they've got?
