Draper Moving On Up

The Victory Hockey League's 38th regular season has just come to an end, with the last games being played last night. Playoffs will begin tomorrow and before you know it, we will be at the beginning of Season 39 to do it all over again. With that, we will surely see players retire, players move around, and new players enter the league. Now, players graduate from the VHLM and enter the big leagues each and every year. This year, however, there is one that we really want to keep our eye on: Don Draper.

Draper is a Canadian-born defenseman who entered the VHLM abruptly just before the start of Season 37. After being drafted by the Yukon Rush at the 10th overall spot, we saw Draper grow a lot throughout his introductory season to VHLM.  Despite his work ethic, his first season in the league really wasn't anything special. Through 70 games he amassed 20 goals and 24 assists, for a total of 44 points on the season.

Even with those less than impressive stats, Don Draper was selected third overall by the Helsinki Titans at the Season 38 VHL Entry Draft. With the Titans being in the midst of a rebuild right now, the Helsinki management felt that Draper's Season 38 would be worth more in the minors. So, back to Yukon he went. This year, things have really turned around for Draper as far as stats go. After being named the captain of the Yukon Rush at the beginning of the season, Draper has totaled 50 goals and 84 assists, or 134 points, through 72 games. That is more than triple his points in Season 37.

With those numbers, and his 290 or so logged practice hours, Don Draper will be forced into the big leagues at the end of the upcoming playoffs. It's going to be very exciting next season to be able to watch Draper in his rookie season, as he plays alongside budding stars like Svoboda and Wylde. We manged to get a hold of Draper by telephone and we asked him about this season, and his future. Here is what he had to say:

"I'm extremely happy with how this season went. We have a great group of guys in Yukon, and it was a pleasure being their captain for the season. We still have playoffs to win, though, and I fully plan on bringing the Founders Cup back to Yukon for the second straight year. As for next season, I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait to get my Titans jersey start my career in the majors. I've got to put in a ton of work to stay on the level of my fellow defensemen, but I think I can do it. if nothing else, I'm definitely going to try."

Content: 3/3 - I hope Draper has a good career. You have a similar path to my own player Jarkko Olsen so far, don't do the whole, inactive for 3 seasons part once you hit the VHL though! It isn't a good idea.

Grammar: 2/2 - season to VHLM. - to the

Appearance: 1/1 - Maybe break up the text one more time, next time.

Overall: 6/6

Final: 6
