  2. Express Drop Four Straight, Swept By Vikings The Cologne Express Concluded VHL's 48th Season with a final record of 34 wins, 34 losses, and 4 overtime or shootout losses for a total of 72 points in the 72 game season. This was good enough for third place in the European Conference, 28 points back of the second-place Stockholm Vikings and 34 points ahead of the fourth-place HC Davos Dynamo and set up a first-round playoff series date with the Stockholm Vikings. Stockholm and Cologne met in the regular season on eight occasions, and it was pretty much a wash in favour of Stockholm who won seven of the meetings, all in regulation time while the Express posted a lone overtime win. Stockholm outscored Cologne in the season series to the tune of 30 to 19 as the shots on goal were 314 to 219, once again favouring the franchise from Stockholm. Cologne's powerplay unit was pretty successful, scoring 7 times on 30 chances for a 23.33% success rate but their penalty-killers were not so fortunate, allowing 7 goals against on 30 chances, a 76.67% success rate.Stockholm's special team units were able to put up the exact same numbers as the previously mentioned numbers put up by Cologne. The Express took 75 penalty minutes, delivered 130 body checks, and blocked 84 shots while the Vikings put up 66, 128, and 48 respectively in the season series. The trend of Stockholm getting the best of Cologne continued into their first-round playoff series, although the Express were able to keep the scores close for the most part. Game one was a 2-1 double overtime win for the Stockholm Vikings and they also picked up a 3-2 overtime win in game two. Game three was dominated by Stockholm when they smoked the Express by a score of 7-1 and finished the series off in Germany with a 3-2 double overtime win. The young Cologne club put up a valiant fight, but in the end it was just not enough to win them a playoff series, let alone a playoff game. Cologne was outscored 15-6 in the series and outshot by a huge amount, 217-140 and the special teams of the Express had a rough go of it. The powerplay unit scored only twice on 11 chances for a 18.18% success rate while the penalty-kill unit allowed three goals on 18 chances, finding an 83.33% success rate. Stockholm's powerplay clicked at 16.67% and their penalty-kill at 81.82% so they struggled even more so. Penalty minutes were 36 for Cologne and 22 for Stockholm with body checks favouring the Vikings 84-48 and the nod in shot blocks going to Express by a count of 47-44. Cologne will now look ahead to this off-season and try to improve their results in Season 49.

  4. Ripe Rookies - Part 4 Hello folks and welcome back for the final edition of "Ripe Rookies" where we will be taking a look and evaluating each VHL rookie on a number of different categories, following the conclusion of the season. In the first edition, we evaluated a trio of rookies, in the form of New York Americans goaltender, Atticus von Braxton as well as Toronto Legion rearguard, Black Velvet and Cologne Express netminder, Artom Zhumbayev. Black Velvet and Atticus von Braxton each received a grade of A, while Artom Zhumbayev took a B- grade home. In the second week, we evaluated a trio of first-year forwards when Davos' Vincent Adultman and Riga's Vincent Virtanen both received an A- grade while Quebec City's Unassisted received an A grade. Last week, a pair of forwards in Davos' William Covington III who received an A+ grade and Cologne's Tyson Kohler who received an A- were evaluated as well as a defenseman in Quebec City's Felipe Rodriguez who took a B+ grade home. This week, the final three remaining rookies will be evaluated when we look at one goaltender and a pair of dedensemen so let's get to it. Jakub Holik - Goaltender - HC Davos Dynamo Jakub Holik was HC Davos Dynamo's first selection and the third overall selection in the Season 48 VHL Entry draft and the Czech-born netminder jumped right into the VHL rather than spending an extra season in the VHLM with the Saskatoon Wild. He had a rough go of it in Season 48 for Davos, posting just seven wins with 33 regulation losses and four overtime or shootout losses in 44 starts for the Dynamo. Holik played 2592 minutes on the season, allowing 148 goals against on 1492 shots faced, giving Jakub a save percentage of 0.901 and a goals against average of 3.43. He took four minutes in penalties and concluded the season without a shutout, adding four assists along the way. Holik and the HC Davos Dynamo finished with the worst record in the entire VHL, missing the playoffs by 30 points but next season, Jakub and the Dynamo will have a season of experience under their belt. For this performance, Jakub Holik will receive a grade of C+. Cap'n Crunch - Defense - HC Davos Dynamo Cap'n Crunch was selected by the HC Davos Dynamo with their third selection and the 21st overall selection, late in the Season 42 VHL Entry Draft and he finally made his VHL debut in Season 48, following seven seasons down in the VHLM. Crunch suited up for just 19 of the 72 games on the season for Davos, scoring just twice with four helpers for six points on the year. He finished with a -8 plus/minus rating on the season with 14 minutes in penalties, delivering 38 body checks along the way.Cap'n received just ten body checks in Season 48 and had only 11 shots on net, for a 18.18% shooting percentage. Crunch blocked 44 shots on the year in over 24 minutes of ice time per game and scoring one game-winning goal with no powerplay or shorthanded points. For this, he will be taking home a grade of C-. David Hamilton - Defense - Cologne Express David Hamilton, drafted in the Season 47 VHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Legion with the fifth overall selection, was brought into the Express franchise via a Season 47 off-season trade that seen a trio of draft picks go the other way, to Toronto. Hamilton made the jump to the VHL this season, following spending Season 47 down in the VHLM with the Ottawa Lynx, coming up short of a Founder's Cup against the Bratislava Watchmen and now teammate, Artom Zhumbayev. David laced up the skates for each and every one of the Cologne Express' 72 games and had an outstanding season, scoring 25 goals and adding 40 assists for 65 points, ranking him eighth among all VHL defensemen and fourth among VHL rookies in point scoring. Hamilton finished Season 48 with a -18 plus/minus rating, 38 penalty minutes, 104 hits delivered, and 127 hits taken. He took 311 shots on net, giving him a 8.04% shooting percentage and 134 shots directed towards the Express net in over 29 minutes of ice time per game. David scored 23 of his points with the man advantage, including 15 goals and a pair each of game-winning and game-tying goals. For this performance, David Hamilton will net himself a grade of A. Well, that brings us to the end of this series folks. I really hope that you all enjoyed each edition of Ripe Rookies, and now it is time to get amped up for the Season 48 VHL Playoffs and the chase for the Continental Cup.
  5. Ripe Rookies - Part 3 Hello folks and welcome back for another edition of "Ripe Rookies" where we will be taking a look and evaluating each VHL rookie on a number of different categories up to this point on the season. Last week, we will be evaluated a trio of first-year forwards when Davos' Vincent Adultman and Riga's Vincent Virtanen both received an A- grade while Quebec City's Unassisted received an A grade. This week, a pair of forwards and a defenseman playing their first season in the VHL are on the evaluation block so let's get to it. Sir William Covington III - Center - HC Davos Dynamo Sir William Covington III was HC Davos Dynamo's first selection and the fourth overall selection in the Season 47 VHL Entry draft and the skilled centerman, a native of Las Vegas, Nevada spent an extra season in the VHLM with the Saskatoon Wild. Covington developed his game and made the jump to the VHL in Season 48, suiting up for all 63 games for Davos thus far this season, scoring 34 goals while adding 37 assists for a total of 71 points, which leads all rookies in goals and points. His plus/minus rating sits at a decent +1 on a last place Dynamo team while logging 14 penalty minutes and delivering 63 body checks while being on the receiving end of 191 body checks. Sir William has taken 347 shots on net, giving him a 9.80% shooting percentage and he has blocked 68 shots directed towards the Davos net. For this performance, Sir William Covington III will be the first rookie to receive a grade of A+. Felipe Rodriguez - Defense - Quebec City Meute Felipe Rodriguez was selected by the Quebec City Meute, just ahead of Sir William Covington III and just behind Artom Zhumbayev with the third overall selection in the Season 47 VHL Entry Draft and he too spent an extra season in the VHLM prior to becoming a VHL pro, he jumped stright into the VHL. Rodriguez has played in all 63 of the Meute's games up to this point in the season and he has had a fairly decent season, all things considered. He has 11 goals which ranks him tied for third on the team and has added 20 assists, totaling 31 points, fifth among Meute players. Less than a third of Felipe's points have been scored on the powerplay (nine powerplay points) and his plus/minus rating sits at an atrocious -46. He has taken 84 penalty minutes on the year and has dished out 140 hits, while receiving 127 hits with 192 shots on net for a 5.73% shooting percentage. Rodriguez has blocked 164 shots on the year in nearly 27 minutes on the ice per game, just one behind the league leader in shot blocks. He has three game-winning goals and a single game-tying goal this season and will be taking home a grade of B+. Tyson Kohler - Right Wing - Cologne Express Tyson Kohler, drafted in the Season 48 VHL Entry Draft by the Cologne Express with the fourth overall selection, made the jump to the VHL this season rather than spending another season down in the VHLM. Kohler has appeared in every of the Cologne Express' 64 games thus far this season and currently sits fourth on the team in points with 47. Of those 47 points, the German winger has potted 23 goals and added 24 helpers with a -16 rating for the playoff-bound Express. Tyson has been very disciplined, logging only 19 penalty minutes on the season while delivering 59 body checks and receiving 62. He has taken 214 shots on net for a 10.75% shooting percentage, and has blocked six shots directed towards the Cologne net. Kohler has scored four game-winning goals and one game-tying goal with 14 of his points coming on the powerplay. For this performance, Tyson Kohler will lock himself a grade of A-. Well, that brings us to the end for this week folks. 9. Ripe Rookies - Part 2 Hello folks and welcome back for another edition of "Ripe Rookies" where we will be taking a look and evaluating each VHL rookie on a number of different categories up to this point on the season. Last week, we evaluated a trio of rookies, in the form of New York Americans goaltender, Atticus von Braxton as well as Toronto Legion rearguard, Black Velvet and Cologne Express netminder, Artom Zhumbayev. Black Velvet and Atticus von Braxton each received a grade of A, while Artom Zhumbayev took a B- grade home. This week, we will be taking a look at and evaluating a trio of first-year forwards so let's get to the first rookie on the grading list this week. Vincent Adultman - Center - HC Davos Dynamo Vincent Adultman was HC Davos Dynamo's second selection and the seventh overall selection in the Season 47 VHL Entry draft and the big centerman, a native of California spent an extra season in the VHLM, winning a Founder's Cup with the Bratislava Watchmen prior to making the jump to the VHL in Season 48. He has suited up for all 40 games for Davos thus far this season, scoring 7 goals while adding 25 assists for a total of 32 points, ranking him third in team scoring. His plus/minus rating sits at a decent -7 on a bad team while logging 18 penalty minutes and delivering 38 body checks while being on the receiving end of 112 body checks. Adultman has taken 128 shots on net, giving him a 5.47% shooting percentage and he has blocked 26 shots directed towards the Davos net. He has logged over 25 minutes of ice time per game, scoring one game-winning goal and winning nearly 57% of his face-offs. For this performance, Vincent Adultman will receive a grade of A-. Unassisted - Center - Quebec City Meute Unassisted was selected by the Quebec City Meute with the second overall selection in the Season 48 VHL Entry Draft but unlike Vincent Adultman, he jumped stright into the VHL, rather than spending an extra season in the VHLM. That appears to have been the right move for Unassisted's development as he has been having a very decent season up to this point. He has played in all 40 games for Quebec City and ranks second on the team in points with 37, ten behind team-leader, Tom Lincoln. 16 of those points have been goals, while the other 21 have been assists and Unassisted sports a +10 rating on the season with 41 penalty minutes. He also has 50 hits on the season and 124 hits taken with 156 shots on net for a 10.26% shooting percentage. Unassisted has blocked eleven shots on the year in over 29 minutes on the ice per game, scoring three game-winning goals and winning over 51% of his 1531 face-offs taken. For that, Unassisted will take home a grade of A. Vincent Virtanen - Left Wing - Riga Reign Vincent Virtanen, drafted in the spot just ahead of Vincent Adultman in the Season 47 VHL Entry Draft with the sixth overall selection by the Riga Reign also spent an extra season in the VHLM before making the jump to the big club this year. Virtanen has laced up the skates for each and every one of Riga's 41 games on the season and currently sits tied for first on the team in points with 29. Of those 29 points, the Canadian winger has tickled the twine only three times but has added 26 helpers with a -12 rating on the last place Reign. Vincent has stayed very disciplined, logging only two penalty minutes on the season while delivering 16 body checks and receiving 99. He has taken 87 shots on net for a 3.45% shooting percentage, blocked 37 shots directed towards the Riga net, and has yet to score a game-winning goal. Vincent Virtanen's performance on the season will net him a grade of A-. Well, that brings us to the end for this week folks. Make sure to come back next week for another edition of Ripe Rookies, when we will select a few more rookies to evaluate their performance up to this point in Season 48.
