To take everyone’s minds off the upcoming trade deadline, Halifax 2’s GM Jeffrey Pines decided to hold a dog show and give a huge prize to the best dog. There was much interest in the competition, with even outsider dogs entering the competition against the rules. The following dogs were entered: Gizmo (Inker Belle) Maggie May (Pelayo Bolivar) Fred (Chad Powers) Pluto (Xhekajs middletoe) Kiro (Elf shoes) Charles (Jeffrey Pines) Itsy (Dorji Khan) Lila (Xhekajs middletoe) Unfortuntely, we were informed by the Pets’ Union for Performers (PUP) that we are unable to use photographs of the dogs without paying them and Halifax have already spent all their budget on shoes for the former GM. Halifax were able to afford to hire the world’s best dog judge, former Halifax captain Bryn Yrwy’s dad. He was hired as an impartial judge as it was thought anyone else connected to the team would be biased. The winner of the first Halifax Best Dog Award is Itsy, owned by former player Dorji Khan. Bryn Yrwy’s dad choice Itsy because of their wonderful disguise as a cat. It was so good one might think they are a cat! The runners up were Kiro (disguised as a rabbit) and Fred (disguised as a fish). There was also a special prize award for the GM’s choice of Best Dog which was awarded to the cutest dog not in disguise, Charles.

Jeffrey Pines is the best detective in the business. Okay, he has never solved any crimes before but he is totally going to ace this murder investigation. The brutal murder had been found in the middle of the Halifax 21st practice rink first thing on Wednesday morning, a scene so horrifying and gruesome that practice had been cancelled and all the players offered therapy to try and recover from what they had seen. Jeffrey’s first suspect was Chad Powers. Anyone with a name like that is more than capable of carrying out this grisly crime. He showed up at Chad’s house to interrogate him and was surprised to see Chad busy in the kitchen. From what Jeffrey knew of Chad, he wasn’t a big fan of cooking, but traumatic events can bring out strange sides of people. He could see that Chad was making some soup, probably to take as a sympathy gift. Jeffrey visited his AGM Smelly Sox because they had also been acting highly suspicious. Smelly Sox denied that they had even been to the rink that day which was a complete lie because they had been there when the murder was found. Unfortunately they also had an alibi as Jeffrey had given him a lift to the rink that morning and so Smelly Sox couldn’t have been there earlier than him. Next, Jeffrey visited Xhekajs middletoe who he highly doubted was the murderer but he also just wanted to visit because Xhekajs is the coolest and the nicest player on the team. But Xhekajs didn’t answer the door when Jeffrey rang the bell. Jeffrey sneaked round the back and used the key under the flowerpot to get inside and was shocked to see Xhekajs lying on the floor in the kitchen. “Help me, Jeffrey. I’ve been poisoned!” he cried, pointing to a bowl on the counter. Next to the bowl, Jeffrey saw a post-it note with “Love, Spartan” scrawled on it. The same handwriting that had been found next to the crime scene that morning on a matching post-it note saying “This is just the beginning!”. Now Jeffrey knew who the murderer was and they had tried to kill one of his player’s and they would pay for this. Jeffrey called the police straight away to report what he had found and in case Spartan came back to Xhekajs' house to finish the job or clean up the evidence. He also called an ambulance because he didn’t want to have to try and find another right wing. Then he drove to Spartan’s house so he could watch Spartan get arrested. The police were quick to arrest him and Jeffrey got to watch as he was dragged outside in his pyjamas screaming “I’m innocent!”. Jeffrey Pines had solved the murder! Jeffrey was very happy that the murderer had been caught before any more damage could be done. He also knew he needed to fix this. He picked up the grieving former Halifax GM Lexie Leitner out to buy new shoes to replace her beloved old shoes that Spartan had so horrendously murdered. So many shoes, all gone, just like that!
