We did specifically tell fong to cut the requirements down and just hire more people.

TBH I was joking because @sterling and I are famously old men of the VHL and like shouting at the new fangled stuff. While I still prefer the forum I recognize the necessity of discord. We are looking to hire more. The trickiness is that while the size of the league has grown as has the requirement of moderators. Gen chat alone for an hour is probably triple what the mods of old had to deal with for a full day. Therefore hiring good mods to do the job means mods have high requirements which makes it hard to find people to do the job. Anyway, we're working on it; both by looking at rule changes and by hiring more hands.

I love that this has brought out the old man in you. “It’s always worked fine before, why are we changing going things” This isn’t sarcasm, I’m actually serious haha.

It doesn’t exist any more for a number of reasons, the main one being that it was incredibly resource heavy and actually caused IPB to boot us off their hosting because it was feeling like a DDOS attack to their servers. We’re in our own hosting now but the cost to host that resource hog is still insanely high that the benefit isn’t worth it. Also it was buggy as hell and next to no one used it. I don’t even know if it’s still compatible with the newer IPB versions.

I mean that is my annoyance with discord. Mind you I recognize it’s kinda a necessary evil. Us old school folks have been used to running leagues on forums for decades and it is totally familiar and fine for us to not have the immediate and constant communication. However newer members tend to struggle more with the forums. They are a relic of the past and often times can behave as such. They want that instant communication and reaction to get more acquainted with the community or ask questions or just be involved in something they understand more. So yeah, discord has long been an annoyance for me for a lot of reasons and moderating it is certainly more difficult. However on the whole I don’t see removing it as being an option. Far more likely is that we put further structure and rules in place for it that mean more topics are off limits on discord but still allowed on the forum, IE what we do with political chat.

I still haven’t ruled it out.

The European finals are set but across the pond the battles are still raging. Let's see how they go!

I’ll flip to the other counter-argument then: 1. Practice Facility already acts as our kinda “activity check in”, we really don’t need multiple. 2. If it’s locker room based that’s basically impossible for updaters to actually keep track of. Im not wholeheartedly against the attempt, I just don’t think TPE for discord posting is really the way to go. In general whenever we have tried to promote posting by paying TPE for it we have found that it just results in mostly spam.

There is not. The issue there is that while obviously discord is important it’s not essential and we have many members who actively choose not to use it, that is completely okay. We can’t disadvantage them for not using a platform they do not enjoy.

With 3 leagues and some people leaving we're in need of a backup simmer in case one of our main simmers isn't available. Generally speaking said backup would also cover the off-season tournaments which offer a useful training ground as well as time for the main simmers to take a break. During those periods they would receive full 8 TPE simmer pay. Under normal circumstances the backup simmer's pay will vary depending on the workload since most weeks they won't be doing anything unless we need them. An ideal candidate will have experience with STHS but that is not required, the league will buy your license for you and train you if required. An ideal candidate would also be very active as they may need to be called on in a relatively short timespan. A windows PC is required to run STHS so people running a Mac exclusively cannot hold the position. In addition live streams are required for skimming so your internet connection and computer must be capable of maintaining that. We put a lot of trust in our simmers and they are privy to a lot of private league information so experience in the league is highly sought after for this position and it is unlikely a newer member will be chosen. As always please leave your comments out of the hiring thread (whether positive or negative) and only reply if you are applying for the position. Our goal is to hire and train the backup simmer relatively quickly so that we can have them run the WJC this season as their first solo attempt. It also just protects us legally. We aren’t just using something someone made us for free and saying we “bought” it in TPE. We own the exclusive rights to the logos we purchase, they belong to the league.

There’s no way to make STHS more visual as that straight up doesn’t exist and using any other engine would introduce a myriad of other problems that are all worse than slightly boring looking sims. FWIW I also find this is very personal. Some people prefer more flash, some people just want the data. Personally I find that I wouldn’t want to sit through a lengthy sim just because it’s more “visually appealing”, I just want to know who won and what the stats were. That’s just me though, I recognize everyone is different.
