How a fitness guru helped transform hockey prodigy Connor McDavid - The Globe and Mail

His season may be over but you won’t catch Tom Eagles on the golf course or taking any time off while the VHL playoffs continue.

Ever since his season ended Tom was back at it in the rink working on his game. He has been seen working with coaches on his defensive game and his endurance. Most players, when their season is done would take some time off to relax and take a break from the game but Tom is trying to stay in shape.

“For me heading into my Sophomore year, I like to stay in shape and keep working on my skills “ Tom Said “ I still have so much to learn and work on in order for me to be successful. This season, as we got to the midway point, the other teams started figuring out my plays so I have to keep training and to make sure I have a few tricks up my sleeve to catch them off guard”

There will be big expectations for the 3rd overall pick next season if Calgary wants to be successful. Tom has to raise his game to the next level and become a marquee defenseman. His goals are to improve on his totals from last season and contribute more offensively.

“I intend to definitely chip in more offensively. If my point totals are lower next season then I have to start thinking I am a bust at 3rd overall “ Tom Said “ but I don’t believe that will happen. With the amount of work I am putting in now and in the off-season, I can only go up from here and prove to everyone that the Wranglers made the right choice”

While Tom might not have been satisfied with his offensive production, his coaching staff had other things to say about how he did.

“ He put up 34 points as a rookie playing 2nd/3rd pairing minutes in the second half of the season, so in our eyes I think he did well “ a Calgary coach said “ If he continues working hard and improving I can definitely see him being an all-star defenseman in the next 2-3 seasons. I think there still might be some growing pains for him next season as he adjusts to the VHL but we definitely see him as a franchise defenseman”

Calgary will be heading into new territory next season as some great players like Tallinder and Lafontaine retired and the team will also be led by a new GM. Calgary are hoping to build on there young core and keep pushing for playoff contention.

If the young guns step up and produce, we can definitely see Calgary making the playoffs next season. Eyes will also be on Tom to see if he can step up his game in his Sophomore season and we will also get to see how the new GM will utilize him going forward. From what we can see Eagles has been heavily working on his defensive game which should help him and the Wranglers shut down opposing team lines.

9/10

Nice article on Tom Eagles and what is going on during the off-season.

The comments about Tom's previous season and the comments about the future were nice, they give the reader a view on what kind of player Tom is, where he is at as a player right now, and how he sees his development. Good stuff.

Picture of McDavid suggests that Tom has some wicked offensive potential in him, which is exciting! Overall, solid article!
