Conner Low tuned into the VHL awards ceremony on July 16th, taking a break from a rigorous study period for the night classes Low started taking during the season. Low was unable to make it to the ceremony this season for the first time in his VHL career, something that didn't bother Low as he expected to be just a seat filler this time around. Low got a huge surprise when he heard VHL commissioner Mitch Higgins announce his name alongside Godavari Yumalatopinto when he announced the winners for the Sterling Labatte trophy. Low was stunned at the events as he saw his name brought up under the “trending down” heading all season long. After experiencing a tough year personally the Labatte trophy win validated all the hard work and personal sacrifices throughout Low’s hockey career.  Low heads into his fifth season in the league, leaving the veteran defenseman four full seasons to tie the VHL record with Daniel Braxton for most Labatte win in a career. Low will head into Season Thirty-Nine in a different role for the Americans for the first time since he put on the red, white, and blue.

Since his rookie season back in Season Thirty-Six, Low has donned the captaincy for the Americans, something he took very seriously on and off the ice. This season superstar forward Odin Tordahl will take the crown from Low and be the captain of the ship heading forward. Low recognized the incredible amount of passion that Tordahl had on and off the ice and sources tell us Low approached General Manager Christopher Miller to take the captaincy until he decides to retire from the league or leave the franchise. Tordahl is a perfect choice for captain a no-brainer for any organization to get behind.

A few days before the VHL Entry Draft took place, Americans fans and players were shocked by the roster shakeup that took place. Miller made a splash in the trade market with two separate trades, the first of which was with the Cologne Express. Logan Laich and Jakob Linholm and two second round picks were sent to the Express in exchange for for winger Riley Stevens, two first round picks in the Season Thirty-Nine draft as well as a second round pick. The second trade saw Tony Stark become a victim of cap management as he was shipped off to the Calgary Wranglers for Jack Ryan and a second round pick. Many around the league were surprised to see the trade between the Americans and Express that saw a pile of young talent traded between the two franchises. The trade from the Americans standpoint makes sense cap wise so the team can compete for more than the VHL usual two or three seasons, while the Express received two more young players to add to their already impressive core.

We leave you with information from league sources that has informed us that Low has left the player agency that saw him scouting high school aged players in North America. The uncertainty regarding his leaving from the player agency business has some wondering if Low won’t be ushering in a young player like many VHL players do upon retiring from the league. With four seasons left in the VHL this picture should become clearer must further down the road.
