How Do Pro Hockey Contracts Work? | Pure Hockey

Earlier this week the Calgary Wranglers announced that they have signed Tom Eagles to a 2 year contract extension which included a NTC for those 2 seasons. There was excitement from the fan base who get to see on of their top defensemen stay in Calgary for a few more years.

" I always told the management that at minimum I will give Calgary 5 years and this extension signifies that " Said Tom " I am happy to be here in Calgary as I think the team is making some great progress in turning into a contender. It's great to see that the team wants me here as well and I look forward to the next 3 seasons"

Tom agreed to a 2 year extension at league minimum which was at his request. When we spoke to him he let us know that he wanted to do whatever he could to help Calgary stay within the cap and to help the team to get some extra players this off-season. Tom has never been a selfish player whether on or off the ice.

" Salary is never the big deal for me, I just want to be on a competitive team and by going for the league minimum, this helps our team have some extra cap to bring in a player " Tom continued " This is a team sport and I wanted to help in anyway I could to help us bring in some talent to help us take the next step"

This signing is a great bargain for Calgary who get to hold onto Tom at the peak of his career. The contract lasts up until most players start to depreciate. With Calgary having signed most of there core, they also made a big move today in acquiring Andrew Su who will help out the Wranglers in the offensive department. Calgary will definitely be a team to watch this upcoming season.

We also spoke to Tom about his future after his contract ends.

" I guess we will have to wait and see. Right now I am here for another 3 seasons and will be giving 100% for those 3 seasons. After that it will depend on where the team is and where I am in my career." Tom said "In the most ideal world, I stay on for the full 8 seasons but that is all just speculation at this point. It's not even a thought in my mind. I am just concentrating on the upcoming season and making sure that I am improving on the ice."

Fans will be hoping that with his extension complete that Tom can now focus solely on his game. He has improved every season so far and entering his 3rd season, many fans are expecting him to take the next step from being a top prospect into an all-star player. In order for Tom to accomplish this, he will need to once again double his stats from last season. With the way his off-season training has been going, many are saying that will not be a problem for him and that we should see his first all-star appearance in the upcoming season.

Review; awesome to have you come back!! I’m excited for this season and seeing what all this team does here. Great article and I like the character you have going for your player. I liked the change in colour text so we know when he’s talking. Let’s get this season going!!! 8/10

Review: Great job! Congrats on the signing. The format of this article is fire, like something I would find on NHL.com. The interviews sprinkled in really make it. And the image of a pen on paper completes it. 10/10

Nice work! This is overall well-written and you seem to have a reasonable grasp on the language. The content of the article is interesting and reminds me of a press conference/interview. I think there are some areas for improvement, namely punctuation that will help you separate out your phrases. For example, in your second paragraph:

"I always told the management that at minimum I will give Calgary 5 years and this extension signifies that," Ssaid Tom, " I am happy to be here in Calgary as I think the team is making some great progress in turning into a contender. It's great to see that the team wants me here as well and I look forward to the next 3 seasons."

If you have a quote separated out into a single sentence, don't forget to include a comma at the end of the first part of the quote as I've done above. The same applies to when you're continuing the second part of the quote, also indicated above in red (said Tom,). This will improve with some practice; you've clearly gotten better over time and would expect that to continue. :)
