Thomas O’Malley: Expansion Bound?

 

Currently Thomas O’Malley is quickly making a name for himself with the Ottawa Lynx, together with Andrew Erikson they are cruising through the opposing defenses like they do not exist. In 21 games so far O’Malley has managed to score a total of 24 goals and 27 assists, a nice total of 51 points, while Erikson on his wing was good for 15 goals and 33 assists, which puts him second in the league with total assists. The two of them look really comfortable to play with each other, but it remains to be seen how comfortable they should remain; for both players are moving up to the VHL next season.

 

 

 

Andrew Erikson has already been drafted last year to the Helsinki Titans, a team stacked full of young talent. O’Malley on the other hand is starting to meet with several general managers all over the world, to see if he is interested in joining their organization at the draft. To put it fair, even though if he said he wasn’t interested he could end up joining their organizations as the teams still hold the power, but it would be nice if there is mutual interest between the teams.

 

 

The first team that had set up a meeting with Thomas O’Malley were the Quebec City Meute. General Manager Frank Chadwick wanted to make sure that the young player knew he was one of the main targets of the franchise, despite having great franchise centers in Azhischenkov and Thomassen they see a big role for him in this franchise. They explained that it was still a young team but that they are on the way up. They are looking for players that want to be there on a long term instead of blowing up the farm for short gain success. Basically the build through the draft tactic that O’Malley’s agent had experience with due to his last client, Remy LeBeau. A tactic that got LeBeau his cup and eight full seasons at the same team. Despite O’Malley not wanting to commit for eight years directly, it felt like the two had a good chemistry about the plans going forward.

 

 

Quebec was not the only team on O’Malley’s trip. After visiting them he took another plane to head off to Cologne, Germany to meet with Alexander Schneider who is the general manager of the Express. Just as in Quebec they had a discussion about seeing O’Malley in the green jersey and again it feels like a good match. They saw their future #1 center in O’Malley, which almost sounds like a guarantee that he didn’t get yet in Quebec. Cologne is still a team in development but has some solid prospects on their roster like Ron World Peace and Blaine Olynick. He think he would fit right in with this franchise and even allowed the team to make a couple of press shots of him in a Express jersey, hoping that would scare away the other teams that were actively pursuing him.

 

 

In the end it will likely all come down to one small detail, the draft lottery. The four bottom VHL teams will be entered in the O’Malley sweepstakes and only one will likely turn out victorious. Besides the already mentioned teams O’Malley has also expressed interest in the Helsinki Titans. The other current lottery team, the Toronto Legion doesn’t attract him that much. As O’Malley’s agent has informed him he would like his clients to play on other teams to improve his contacts throughout the league, and with his last client Remy LeBeau playing there for eight full seasons, there isn’t much to gain there for the agent. So far all signs point towards to O’Malley ending up with one of the expansion teams, and he doesn’t mind that for a single bit.
