HOF Player Career Summary

As it is in every sports league there are going to be some over achievers, you could say they are in a league of their own. That’s who I will be talking about today, the players inducted into the Hall of Fame. 

 

Mathias Chouinard

Mathias Chouinard was drafted in season 18 by the Calgary Wranglers in the 1st round. Chouinard was clearly a hall of fame talent based off the Wranglers drafting him even with a mere 17 TPE, which was 26th in his class. Mathias went over to the VHLM playing for Minot in his first season. He absolutely dominates the league getting 119 points in 72 games in the season. In his second season it is impossible to not see the jump in his play as he gets 195 points in the season. Following his outstanding performance he moved up to the big leagues to play for the Calgary Wranglers. He gets a pretty good result out of his first VHL season as he gets 95 points in 72 games. Even as a rookie there are already glimpses of his scoring ability peeking through. He jumps again in the next season getting 118 points but it ets worse in the next season. He drops back down to 90 points and in the next season down to 80. Following his lowest point season he makes a big jump getting 124 points throughout the season. He drops some points the next year going back to 107 points, He retires after this year. Chouinard had a illustrious career and ended up finishing his career with 434 Game Played, 286 Goals, 338 Assists, and along with those astounding stat lines  he won numerous awards such as the VHL All-Star(S21, S22, S23, S24, S25), the Continental Cup(S23, S24, S25), the Devon Marlow-Marta trophy(S23), He won the Howe trophy in season 23 also. He won the Vladimir Kostka Trophy(S24, S25), and in season 24 he was awarded the Lemiux trophy for the most points in the league. At the end of his VHL career he played for two VHL teams and was inducted into the hall of fame in season 68.

 

Mathew Pogge

The Swiss goaltender Mathew Pogge was drafted with Vasteras’ second pick in the S1 inaugural VHL draft. Vasteras was looking for a star goaltender and that is what they got with Pogge. He provided the call of the team and provided a solid 46-14-4 record in 64 games. He finished that season with a 2.30 GAA adn a .901 S% finishing second in the league for both of thse stats. He led his team to the playoffs where they won the Continental Cup as he posted a 8-3-0 record with a 2.61 GAA and .917S%. In his second year in the league he provided a better showing as he posted a 55-12-4 record tagging along was a 2.41 GAA and a .906 S%. He led his team to the playoffs once again but were stopped in their tracks by the Calgary Wranglers. Pogge in that playoff posted a record of 4-2-2 leaving behind a GAA of 3.34 and a S% of .895  In his third season in the league he put up a 45-18-9 record much worse than the season before although he did improve his GAA average posting a 2.00 and tagging along a .912 S%. Making it back into the playoffs again he and Vasteras were knocked out in the 7 games. The worse and worse stats carry over into his last season of play in season 4 where he had a 35-21-6 record with a 2.78 GAA adn a .897 S%. He made it to the playoffs once again but just like the previous year he and Vasteras got knocked out in the first round in 6 games. At the end of his career his second season would be the peak of his time in the VHL. Pogge finished his last season adn his career with a record of 185-65-23 and a 2.48 GAA align with a .908 S% along with many awards including The Continental Cup in season 1, The Vladimir Kostka Trophy(S1, S2), The Howe Trophy in season 1, The Tretiak Trophy(S1, S3), European Conference All-Star(S1, S2, S3, S4), The Victory Cup in season 2, He also made the Swiss national team in following his best year in season 2. He played for 4 seasons doing his best in his first two seasons and was one of the first to be inducted into the hall of fame. 

 

Petr Shirokov

Shirokov is a Swiss based defensman who was originally drafted by the Amstel Tijgers who are now known as the Avangard Havoc. Petr was originally a forward for the Havoc before he switched to a defenseman. He played for 4 seasons his first of them being with Amstel where he posted a great statline of 45 goals and 50 assists for 95 points in 72 games in the season. He helped push them to the playoffs that first year when the team was knocked out in 5 games. The next year is when the switch from the Tijgers to the Avangard Havoc happened and he took a major step back putting up a mere 46 points in the season as he scored 17 Goals and dished out 29 Assists. It was a disappointing season for the whole team as they missed the playoffs and another year goes by. He started off his third season with Avangard once again tallying a total of 8 Goals and 19 Assists through 20 games he played before being traded over to Hamilton. In Hamilton he played a total of 35 games with them that season, grouping up 16 Goals and 24 Assists which adds up to 40 points. Shirokov seemed to be getting back to form as he was in that first season. He was traded again, this time he was shipped off to Helinski where in only 16 Games he amassed a great total of 10 Goals and 25 Assists for 35 Points. Helinski made it to the postseason due to Petr’s help where they won in an outstanding 7 game series in the first round before steaming off losing in 7 in the second round. This year looked bright for the Swissmen as his performance jumped back up to a standard level. After the success the year before with Helinski he signed back with Avangard for about half the season before being sent off again. With his 27 games on the Avangard roster he tallied 5 Goals and 20 equaling 25 Points in 27 Games. Halfway through the season he was shipped off to Hamilton once again where he played the remaining 48 Games. In those Games he scored 20 Goals and 46 Assists and 66 Points. Hamilton made it to the Playoffs that year but they were knocked out in the first round in 6 games which ended the career of this hall of fame defensman. He never won a Continenetal Cup but he did tally up many points including 121 Goals and 213 Assists for 334 Points in the 290 Games he played. Among his awards that he won is the Sam Polluck Memorial Trophy which he won in season 1, European Conference All-Star(S1, S2, S3) The North American Conference All-Star in season 4, The Vladimir Kostka Trophy in season 3, The Orr Trophy in season 3 also, He was also a member of the Swiss National team. He had an outstanding career and will be remembered as a member of the hall of fame. 

 

Maxim Desney

Desney is a Russian born goalie who was drafted in the first round of the season 1 draft by Toronto. In his first year he was traded halfway through the year to Helinski. He scored a very average record of 10-10-2 in his first 22 games. Barely making a break in the shell of the league he was tradedto Helinski where his stats dropped significantly. His record at the end of the season for Helinski was 13-37-2 with a GAA of 3.75 and a .889 S%.  He started his second season with Helinski where his stats improved by a little bit. He put up a 27-44-1 record with a 4.40 GAA and a .907 S%. His stats improve and there is a big jump in his next season as he makes the playoffs for his first time. He played the next season with Helinski where he posted a 31-35-5 record. In the playoffs Helinski was knocked out. Disney started out his 4th season with Helinski once again and posted a 15-28-7 record before he was traded back to his original team in Toronto where he had a record of 1-2-1. Toronto did not make the playoffs but the next year he was right back home in Helinski. He put up a 47-13-2 record along with a .923 S% and a 2.54 GAA. He pushed Helinski into the playoffs in his final season where they lost to the Seattle Bears in game 5. At the end of a much inspirational career he had a record of 144-167-20 tagged on with a .911 S% and a 2.54 GAA along with many awards, among them being, Tretiak Trophy(S2, S5), The Messier Trophy in season 2, The European Conferance All-Star(S2, S3, S5), Team Scandanavia Member(S2, S4), Vladimir Kostka Trophy(S3, S5), Sam Pollock Memorial Trophy(S3), and the Howe Trophy in season 3.

 

These are some of the most notable players in the early years of the league and they will be remembered in the hall of fame.

REVIEW: I know this was written a couple of weeks ago, but I really want to give you props @DC21 for writing this article. I am assuming you're a new member and not a returning member from this time period, but not many members who weren't around then would choose to go back this far into VHL history to write about. It's nice for those who weren't around then to learn about some of these VHL greats. This would also make a great series to keep reviewing and bringing to the forefront these older players.

Review:

As a beginner of this forum I'm currently browsing around and trying to figure out how to get around the site, checking out the leagues and getting my first sweet TPE! I stumbled across your post and it made me really happy to see that there is a Hall of fame included in here. I have to check that out right after I post this revied  extremely detailed and well researched articlem thank you for that! It wouldn't hurt with a bit more text management so all the text isn't just stacked together, but that's just me being picky! great read
