Introduction

In this report we will be assessing the young Callum Murray who will be eligible for the S84 VHL entry draft. Callum Murray is a strong built defender who will be a reasonable asset for most teams.

Pros

Checking

Callum is a big bodied defender and he knows how to throw around his 225lbs. He will hit anyone in his lane and is very good at using his body to pin people up against the boards. Watching the games he played in Mexico makes me not want to get anywhere near him. It looks the equivalent to running into a brick wall.

Shots Blocked

Callum seems to always be in the shooting lanes and makes a lot of moves to make sure shots don’t get past him. Watching the games you can see that the Goalie will trust Callum to block shots and they can cover the other part of the net.

Leadership

You can see when watching any games where Callum plays that he knows how to manage a team. He is great at encouragement and keeping team morale quite high. It is very rare to see that you see Callum’s team with their heads dropped or giving up. They play through until that final siren.

Cons

Discipline

Callum loves laying hits as I have mentioned above. This can however lead to some unnecessary penalties and him spending a lot of time in the box. Also due to his great leadership if Callum enters the box it can a lot of the time lead to a Power Play goal for the other team as they lose his leadership skills and his great defensive mindset.

Injury Prone

Callum is a man that always puts his body on the line. He will always give 100% in his hits and blocking shots. This means that he can suffer a few injuries, he ends up missing a few games each season due to this. So far he hasn’t suffered any sever injuries but he gets a few little ones every year.

Unnecessary Shots

Sometimes when Callum gets into the offensive zone he will shoot the puck when there is not always  the perfect opportunity to shoot. This leads to a lot of his shots getting blocked and a few unnecessary turnovers.

Conclusion

I can currently see Callum being a late first round to early second round pick. There will most likely be better choices for defenders but will be a solid 2nd pairing for most teams moving forward.
