Hey everyone! Do you ever talk to yourself about things? Probably not, but I do it all the time. Then I wonder why I haven't made an article on the VHL website about it for some sweet, sweet TPE.

Here are just a few of my thoughts on hybrid attributes.

I wonder why in the build guidebook it says the most important stat as a defensive defenseman is Defensive Coverage instead of Poke Checking. It seems bizarre; because PC increases your regular STHS defense stat more than DC. Strength isn't an eye-popping stat, but I'm willing to have strength instead of skating if it lets my player pass/shoot more.

Why doesn't fighting increase your strength? In the non-simulated world, someone who's a better fighter should be stronger than someone worse.

Why does stick handling include skating? I haven't played much ice hockey in my lifetime, but I don't think having better control of the puck makes you a faster skater. I get that this one probably has something to do with the meta, as PH is an important stat to grow as a defenseman and a forward.

That's all for this week's 2 TPE task! Feel free to flame me in the replies!

Because we added the attribute late and didn't think of it honestly.

I feel like the name is the bigger issue really. We just wanted something that combined a couple of secondary attributes.

Fighting doesn't increase strength because it was added late and after we already had a bunch of other attributes that already hit strength. It's one of the easiest attributes to upgrade, and I'm honestly not even sure if it impacts fights at all.

Stickhandling includes skating because you don't just stand in one place and stickhandle, you have to move while doing it. Deking is the one that involves DF in a small amount, since DF is considered to be an intelligence/positioning stat - therefore dekes are more skill involved and not just centered on speed/skating or even just puckhandling ability.

Also DC is important than PC because DC gives you both DF and SK, while PC gives you DF and ST. SK is considered one of the core 4 attributes, while ST is not. So despite lower ratios on DC because it has two relatively important STHS attributes, it's still considered a bit more valuable than PC because it improves multiple key STHS attributes instead of just one as PC does.

The one caveat to what Spartan said is the VHLM level, where if you are trying to hit a goal DF number in the 60s (and you probably should be at 200 TPA), going pure DC makes it nearly impossible, while a mix of DC, PC and a pinch of DK makes it pretty trivial to do in a balanced build. So just because one is slightly better than the other in the grand scheme of things, doesn't mean it always better in all use cases. A lot of the time a healthy mix of efficient attributes is what you want, not just all out everything in the "best" attributes anymore. This applies at all levels of building to be fair, it's just that beyond the M level the point at which you "swap" attribute to update, is usually at a new update scale tier (going from 1 TPE per point to 2 TPE per point, etc.). Whereas in the M you have to find where in the 0-70 tier to make that swap yourself, without the "guidance" of the update scale.
