Smarch 3,153
League Leaders As we near the midway point of another Victory Hockey League season, superstars are starting to pull away from the pack, establishing themselves among the league leaders in statistics. Today we’ll take a look into the individual leaders around the league, giving our opinion on how could take home some hardware come season’s end. Goals: A year ago the Vasteras Iron Eagles were once again the talk of the VHL, a team that was edge of relocating for the third time in the franchise’s history. Fast forward one year and the Iron Eagles and their players are the talk of the league for a totally different reason. A long time Vasteras veteran, and a blue-chip rookie are number one and two respectively in the VHL scoring race. Niklas Lindberg is currently in the lead for the goal scoring race with twenty-nine points, while Tyron Williams sits one goal behind Lindberg with twenty-eight goals. While Lindberg’s name is nothing new amongst the league leaders, Williams is quite the surprised for the Swedish hockey club. The word around the league is that Lindberg will be finding a new home when the trade deadline creeps closer, so we don’t expect Williams to keep up on his torrid pace without Lindberg anchoring the center of their line. If Lindberg will be able to take his game to his new team come deadline day, look for Lindberg to pull out the goal lead come seasons end. Assists: Another savvy veteran sits on top of the assist point lead, only this time he is donning a new jersey for the first time in his career. English defensemen Matt Bentley, who during his time in the league has usually played second fiddle to the league’s other defensemen, has finally stepped out of the shadow to take the league by storm here in Season Forty. After spending his first five seasons with the HC Davos Dynamo, Bentley was shipped off across the pond to the Quebec City Meute, where he would be the best defenseman of the roster by a large margin. Bentley has forty-two assists in only thirty games this season, which is nine more than Lindberg’s thirty-three assists. With no other clear opposition in the rear view mirror, look for Bentley to take home his first Beketov Trophy in what is quickly shaping up to be a hall of fame career. Rookie Scoring Race: Each year in the VHL one of the most contested award come the seasons end would have to be the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy. Each season the VHL has top notch prospects suit up for a VHL club looking to become the next big thing in the league. This year would be no different, with up incoming superstars, Tyrone Williams, Thomas O’Malley, Mason Richardson donning a VHL jersey for the first time in their young careers. As we touched upon earlier in the article, Williams is having an outstanding rookie season in Vasteras, currently leading all rookies in scoring with fifty-two points. The next closest player is Cologne Express forward Thomas O’Malley who has forty-two goals in the twenty-nine game he has appeared in this season. The rookie scoring race could come down to the moves made at the trade deadline, but only time will tell if Williams can continue on his torrid pace, or will be slow down and let O’Malley back into the race. I still think O'Malley wins ROY.
