Toronto Legion S95 Team Awards

 

Hello, and welcome to the awards ceremony for last season's Legion team! It was a great season for the Legion, one that ended in heartbreak in Game 7 of the Continental Cup Finals. It was also the final season in blue and white for Mac Atlas and Jimi Jaks, ending the tenure of two of the longest serving members of the team. This marked the second season in a row that the Legion almost sent franchise icons out on top, following Joel Castle's retirement after the Game 6 loss in the Continental Cup in S94.

Most Valuable Player

#88 Harry Callahan

The team leader in multiple statistical categories, veteran forward Harry Callahan received a nomination for VHL MVP as well. It was a career high in goals and points for Callahan, helping propel the Legion to a solid playoff spot. This is Callahan's first Legion MVP award.

Best Defender

Continuing to lead the Legion in points by defenders for the fifth consecutive season, it was a no-brainer decision for Bobby Bob to win this award. An elite defender for the Legion, Bob is the top option at even strength, on the power play, and on the penalty kill. That all-situations versatility and value provided to Toronto is a large part of the reason that Bob was named team captain this past off-season. This is the fifth consecutive season for Bobby Bob winning the Best Defender award for the Legion.

Unsung Hero

#71 Diego Machado

An ever consistent contributor for the Legion, Diego Machado has been a vital player in Toronto for multiple seasons now. Monster offensive seasons that have perhaps been overshadowed by teammates should not take away from how good Machado has been. As voted by teammates, it is clear that his contributions and efforts have been noticed for the team, even though the league award group may not have. Machado just barely missed out on a third consecutive 100 point season, and will be counted on to continue that offensive dominance this season. This is Machado's second consecutive Unsung Hero award.

Most Gentlemanly

#21 Walter Fitzroy Jr.

Pulling double duty for the Legion as both a defender and the teams General Manager, it takes a certain kind of suaveness to pull it off as well as Walter Fitzroy Jr. does. On the ice, Fitzroy Jr. handles hard defensive minutes without piling up the penalty minutes season after season, and has been a key part of the Legion defensive work in their own zone. Off the ice, Moon continues to foster a positive environment in the locker room and in the front office. There's a reason why so many players have been recently committed to playing their entire VHL careers in Toronto, and it starts at the top of the organization. This is Fitzroy Jr.'s first Most Gentlemanly award.

Most Energetic

From daily chat to posting box scores, Harry Callahan has been among the most active members of the Legion locker room. This is Callahan's fifth consecutive Most Energetic award.

Rookie of the Year

Coming into the VHL as a rookie defender is a difficult task, where there's nowhere to hide with protected minutes on the ice. It's a testament to Andrew Skilton's hard work that he was capable of not only handling those minutes, but by actually thriving on the ice. In his first season in the VHL, Skilton managed to cross the 50 point barrier, and remained on the plus side of the plus/minus all season long. Skilton's physicality led to him leading the Legion in hits, shot blocks, and penalty minutes as a rookie, adding sandpaper on the back end that the Legion were in desperate need of. He will be trusted to take a further step this season as a future anchor of the Legion blueline corps.

 

Top Prospect

#4 Dorji Khan

Dorji Khan spent the final season of the VHLE lighting the league on fire offensively, racking up 99 points for the Bratislava Watchmen. The Legion S94 2nd round pick (22nd overall) has already jumped to the 16th highest TPE in his draft class, and with the hard work that he has put in so far, that will only continue to climb. It didn't take long for Khan to make his way up to the VHL roster, joining the Legion team this season and contributing a goal very early on in the season. Re-upping with the Legion before this season ensures that Khan will be a big part of the next wave of offensive talent in Toronto.

 

Legionary of the Year

#88 Harry Callahan

After a solid season on and off the ice, Harry Callahan wins the Legionary of the Year vote for the fifth consecutive season. It's an honour bestowed on him by his teammates that is not taken for granted.

This was a close battle at the top of the board between 5 players right up until the last couple weeks of the season. Diego Machado led the team in total stars, edging Callahan out by one. Both members of the Legion S89 draft class, it's fitting that they remain close together on the top of the list. It speaks to the contributions of the group that five different players had more than 15 total stars on the season. It all added up to a special regular season in Toronto in S95.
