Greg_Di 1,022
A long time ago in season 18, there was a player by the name of Greg Eagleowski who played for the Calgary Wranglers. Eagleowski played only 2 seasons in the VHL, his first season with the Wranglers he led them to a cup. His second season with Toronto is lost to the history books and not much is known about his time there. Eagleowski had huge potential when he was originally drafted 5th overall but never lived up to the hype. Rumours of not attending practice, always partying and even not showing up to games damaged his potential of becoming a VHL hall of famer. For the short time he did play, he impressed with his defense and goal scoring abilities. He was drafted as a RW but by the time he won a cup with the Wranglers he was positioned as a defenseman. So who was this Eagleowski and is there any relation to the current Eagles dysnaty? We sat down with Roger Eagles to discuss. " I have heard this story handed down from generation to generation on why there was an Eagleowski. The original Greg Eagles from season 2 who got the family into the VHL (not the S67 Greg Eagles) was a goalie like me and is one of our great great great grandfathers. He was the OG in this league for our family name and is really the one who got the family interested into hockey. Now for Greg Eagleowski, I don't know if you can count him as an official Eagles but he was part of the family back in the day. Eagleowski was adopted into the family at a young age and always showed signs of excellence in hockey. He did have a mean streak though and was never fully committed even though the skill was there. The original Greg Eagles wanted to bring him into the VHL but didn't want to potentially tarnish the Eagles name for future generations, in case it all went bad with Eagleowski. So the decision was made that when he entered the league, his last name was changed to Eagleowski. This would help protect the Eagles family name and as well there wouldn't be any confusion with two Greg Eagles in the league, our family never liked to use junior to differentiate" Roger retells the story "From what I heard he was a very skilled player that could have been one of the best in the league but instead he is a story we are told of what not to do. Every Eagles member that makes it into the VHL is warned to not be like Eagleowski. The OG Greg Eagles had good sense to not give him our family name as it would be a tarnished name. Eagleowski just couldn't get it together, the money and fame got to him and the potential was wasted on living the party lifestyle. He spent a long time in the minors before he even cracked the VHL, due to that lifestyle. Many thought that once he made VHL, he would clean it up a bit and for that season he did. He instantly become one of the Wranglers favorite players and brought them a cup. As soon as that cup was won, he fell back down into the partying world and was never as effective as before. He ended up in Toronto for his last season and was just a shell of his previous self. We actually don't know what happened to him after that, we don't even know if his alive. He just sort of disappeared. Sad to see so much wasted potential" Aimee 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/152680-the-lore-of-greg-eagleowski/ Share on other sites
