Helsinki Check-In

Although we are just 9 or 10 games into the regular season, Season 42 is already shaping up to be an exciting one. There is many interesting story-lines developing all over the league, but one of particular interest is the so far exceptional performance of Don Draper, a defenseman and team captain with the Helsinki Titans.

Ever since his entrance to the VHL in Season 39, Draper has played far below expectations for a player of his caliber. Now, he may well have finally found his groove. Again, he's only played 8 games so far and he could very well fade back into irrelevancy, but for the moment he is playing pretty darn good for the Titans.  With 11 points in 8 games, Draper is currently the Titans leading point-getter and 3rd among defenseman in the VHL, only behind the likes of Stockholm's Jack Kowalski and New York old-timer Matt Bentley.

Hopefully he can keep it up. Though, he probably won't. In any event, the Titans as a whole have come out of the gate fairly strong. Other than the off-season acquisition of veteran goaltender Mike Szatkowski Jr., the Titans relied solely on the continued development of their core as they moved into Season 42 after a disappointing playoff departure in Season 41. Through their 10 games, the Titans are 6-3-1, tied with their much-hated European Conference rivals, the Cologne Cabooses. With Riga imploding during the Season 41 off-season, the race is on for European dominance between the two previously mentioned rivals.

Due to a series of unfortunate events that have occurred ever since the main part of the Titans rebuild back in Season 37/38, the clock is ticking for Helsinki. Losing Vojceck Svoboda, the defenseman that was intended to be the face of the franchise, and the woes of Kimmo Salo and his lackluster play has put the Titans in a very awkward position with limited time as they go forward. One could certainly speculate the possibility that Helsinki may well only have a two or three seasons remaining as a competitive team, if management decides to kick-start the rebuild and try to pick up the pieces lost by Svoboda and Salo. However, that’s a whole different article.

Where were we again? Oh, right, this was supposed to be about Don Draper. That didn’t work out. Who do you talk about when Don fails you? Well, Jackson Miller of course!

Miller, a Season 39 draftee, has struggled greatly the past few seasons. This season, like Don, he seems like he may have found his sweet spot. Playing alongside veteran center-woman Naomi Young and fellow Season 39 draftee James Faraday, Miller has accrued 13 points and a +5 rating through his first 11 games so far this season. Again, a very small sample size, but Miller is looking pretty solid in comparison to last seasons early games, and we hope he continues that.

I'll leave the thread open since you just barely posted it. Let it be open for some discussion. I was too fast grading it. ;)
