Basic Information

Name: Jorma Ruutu

Height: 190.5 CM
Weight: 97.5 KG
Position: Left Wing
Handness: Right
Hometown: Tampere , Finland

PROS:

Skating:

There is not much that you can do when he gets his wheels moving. That big frame combined with powerful but still rather elegant skating style makes him pain in the ass to play against. You can clearly see his figure skating background when you watch him. Remains to be seen if he can improve his top end speed in the future. Skating technique is still elite level especially for a player of his size.

Defensive positioning:

Positioning is big part of hockey and Ruutu got it just right.  You dont always have to be the fastest or biggest guy on the ice if you position yourself right. Positioning makes Ruutu a great penalty killer and extremely hard to beat 1on1.  Big guy who got nice reach as well. If you are looking for a text book example of a defensive forward, Ruutu´s name and picture should come up. If not now , in the future for sure.

Body checking:

Perhaps the most noticeable part of his game.  Pretty much every single game he throws his body around and tries to make opposite teams players have that moment of doubt back of their heads that leads to turnovers and eventually goals.   He has really matured in the last months , not so many open ice hits anymore. Trying to pick his spots . Hitting numbers are still high so body checking will always be part of his tool box. Interesting to see if injuries will be a problem in the future.  Over the top physical playing style doesn´t exactly help you to avoid injuries.

CONS:

Scoring:

Throw the puck towards the net and just crash the net. That is Ruutu´s motto , or at least that´s what it looks like.  Sometimes he might surprise you and score from weird angles but overall goal scoring is not his strenghts.  His shot is hard and heavy but the accuracy is something else. He shoots around 6 times per game , but manages to shoot between the pipes maybe twice.  Ruutu´s wristshot is harder than many other players slapshot. Main area to improve is the accuracy.

Fighting:

For a player of his size  who likes to talk loads of trash, Ruutu is not much of a fighter. Rarely drops the gloves. I guess thats part of his game. Talks so much that other players want to fight him almost in every game.  Absolutely infuriating player to play against. Remains to be seen if that changes if he ever makes it into VHL.  In VHL you must answer for your actions.  We heard that he is taking some boxing lessons at the moment so who knows , maybe the fighting turns out to be one of his strenghts.

Puck handling:

Ruutu is rather one dimensional player at the moment. Just crash the net and hope for the best. Likes to keep things as simple as possible, which is not a bad thing but sometimes you need to take some risks.  So far in his career he has scored 0 goals in 7 penalty shot attempts so its quite clear that deking is not his strenght either.  You just cant use soft hands and Jorma Ruutu in the same sentence.  We have seen some improvements on his puck handling this season but nothing major.

RECAP:

2 way forward who can also play as a defender. Ruutu´s skating ability and nice reach makes him valuable penalty killer.  Plays extremely physically which might lead to injuries in the future. Not a huge threat offensively but defensive side of his game is already on a good level.  VHL draft is coming up soon and at the moment we are predicting a later rounds selection for Ruutu.

Overview: 2/2 - You hit the word mark here quite well. Solid RP.

Pros & Cons: 3/3 - Should include at least 3 solid pros (strengths) and 3 solid cons (weaknesses). The pros and cons section is the core of the rookie profile and should be around 350-400 words at minimum.

Grammar: 1.75/2 - There is a good number of errors in this piece, and a lot of the same mistakes.

"makes him pain in the ass to play against" - makes him A pain in the ass to play against.

"Remains to be seen if he can improve" - IT remains to be seen

"Positioning is big part of hockey" - is A big part of hockey

"dont" - don't. Forgotten apostrophe

"Big guy who got nice reach as well."  - He's a big guy who's got a nice reach as well/who has a nice reach as well

"have that moment of doubt back of their heads" - moment of doubt IN the back of their heads"
"strenghts" - strength

"I guess thats part of his game." - that's. Missing an apostrophe.

"so its quite clear" - it's

"cant " - can't. When you're connecting two words like, can not and make it can't, there has to be an apostrophe.

Presentation: 1/1 - A title, a picture(s), and perhaps some bolding and/or headings should be included.

Overall: 7.75/8

Overview: 2/2 - Thought it was good, and there was some solid information about the type of player you want to build overall.

Pros/Cons: 3/3 - Had three of each, and all of the three were well explained. Well over the word count as well. Good job here.

Grammar: 1.5/2 - In addition to the above, I just had two main points that I wanted to make you aware of. Watch out for this sort of thing in the future.

Perhaps the most noticeable part of his game. = Not a full sentence, needs both a subject and a verb. Watch out for fragments, were a few of those.

He has really matured in the last months , not so many open ice hits anymore. Trying to pick his spots . = Punctuation like commas and periods should always go directly after the word in front, then one space after (was a point where you didn't have a space after a period as well).

Presentation: 1/1 - Is that... a recorder? I think it is!

Total: 7.5/8

Final: 8/8
