Tagger 2,722 Posted March 9, 2015 Share Posted March 9, 2015 After his torrid offensive performance in Season 41 where he was only able to put up a miserly 17 points in a 72 game season, one would be forgiven for thinking that Edwin Encarnacion’s chances at winning any semblance of an award would be over. However, it turns out that the Dominican hockey player had different plans altogether as some would argue that Encarnacion is currently having his best season to date. Nearly at the halfway point of the season, Encarnacion has put up exactly a point per game with 34 points in 34 games (already double the amount of points he had the season prior) in addition to another excellent defensive season statistically, as he leads the league in hits and is currently third in the league in shots blocked. What’s perhaps most incredible about Edwin’s achievements to this point in the season is that it hasn’t come at the cost of his beloved PIMs, as he’s managed to put together these strong performances despite spending 144 minutes of the season in the penalty , leading the league in that category. In fact, Edwin has been dominant in his PIM earning, as only five other players in the league have over half of Edwin’s current PIM total. Not a truer word could be said about Edwin's feelings on the Penalty Box So what has sparked this incredible turnaround? Is it perhaps that Edwin is on course to have one of his best PIM earning seasons? As of right now, Encarnacion is currently on pace to earn 304 penalty minutes this season, which would not only be his greatest PIM earning season in his career but also make him only the sixth player ever to break the 300 penalty minute barrier. Coincidentally Edwin’s best offensive season to date (Season 39 where he put up 67 points along with earning a couple of votes for the Labatte Award) coincided with what currently is his best PIM earning season to date. Do Edwin’s beloved PIMs actually motivate him to perform better with the puck? Another theory is that perhaps the systems in place in Calgary have helped Edwin overachieve this season. Calgary has a great recent history of getting the most out of mediocre defensemen; along with Encarnacion in Season 39 and this current season, the Wranglers were able to get all-star performances out of Tony Stark in Season 41. Stark had a tremendous start to that season, putting up an incredible 59 points in his first 47 games, however he was traded to the Meute at the trade deadline and wasn’t able to perform anywhere close to the level of his performances in Calgary. Luckily for Encarnacion’s award chances, he will not be facing the same fate as he made it clear to Calgary management prior to his signing that he did not want to be traded from the team. The VHL Administration are hoping the man they call "The Fury" will deal with Encarnacion The final possible reason behind Encarnacion’s improved performances this year is that maybe, just maybe, he’s finally gotten wind of the plans that the VHL administration have for Encarnacion at the end of the season. While the topic has been discussed in the mass media, it is understandable as to why Encarnacion would not have heard about the administration’s plans. Any newspaper articles relating to Encarnacion are reserved for small 100 word articles in the later pages after a raft of printing factories were burnt down by Encarnacion following multiple newspaper outlets publishing negative front page headlines about him. You kept things diverse in your reasoning, not bludgeoning one point down our throats but exploring the many variables that go into player success. Plus, you're a Brekker Bad qt Grammar: 2/2 - No grammatical errors I can find, or at least they aren't distracting and aren't obviously bad.Appearance: 1/1 - Captions for your pictures will almost always guarantee a 1 in this category.
