Martin Brookside, goaltender for the Cologne Express, has finally won a cup. This was a long time in coming, although considering some of the results in the early years in Calgary, it might not have been entirely surprising if one never came along for him. Yet here he is, career revitalized after the trade to Cologne, where he has spent a full season and where he will spend one additional season prior to his career coming to a close - although the paperwork will be filed in a matter of days, the league has a rule permitting a player to be "retired" yet still participate, a rule that Brookside is taking Chris of.

Many players retire from the VHL and go on to find careers in the NHL, still others find jobs in the front offices of VHL franchises. Brookside will be doing neither of these. Instead, he will be named the head of the marketing division of Brookside Chocolates, a company owned by his uncle Gary and a position he might not be entirely qualified for, but it is if nothing else an excellent PR move by the chocolate company.
