Glaciem 86
Looking Deeper into Oslo’s Success The Oslo Storm sits first in the VHLM with a solid 12-3-0 record, one point ahead of the Yukon Rush and Saskatoon Wild. Many pundits claim the play of goaltender Sandro Clegane is the principle reason why, leading the league in shutouts, GAA, and third in save percentage. While Clegane is performing admirably the success of Oslo is not because of goaltending. It is due to a team philosophy based around defense and the importance of puck control. First off it has to be stated that Oslo does not score often. They sit fifth in scoring averaging only 2.5 goals a game a full goal a game behind the fourth highest scoring team the Rush and almost two goals a game behind the Blades. While the Blades and Watchmen average 4+ goals a game… no one has scored four goals or more against the Oslo Storm. That gives an idea of the strength of the Storm’s defensive scheme, but why are people not able to score against the storm? For that we need to look at puck possession. In this case the best defense is a good offense, but not in the traditional sense. Despite being a mediocre offensive team production wise Oslo has spent an entire hour more than any other team with possession in the offensive zone through 15 games. This may be a difficult stat to understand, so to put it in another context Oslo is in the offensive zone with possession for 25 minutes a game. The closest team is Saskatoon with 20 minutes of offensive possession. Other top teams such as Brampton or Yukon average 18 and 19 respectively. As a result of the offensive zone pressure the Storm spend less time in their end than anyone else. However, even when the puck gets to Oslo’s end they have control of that puck 38% of the time; the highest percentage in the league. Oslo is obviously very good at maintaining possession, but why? Face-offs. The main reason the Oslo Storm dominate possession to the degree they do is due to winning a ridiculous amount of face-offs. When Oslo and their opposition line up for a draw Oslo wins the draw 69% of the time. That is a full 9% better than any other team in the league. These numbers get even more outstanding in the offensive zone where the Storm wins 72% of the draws, an absurd 18% better than anyone in the offensive zone. Player wise Oslo has three of the top four faceoff men in the VHLM including Le’Sean Coutzen who wins 75% of his draws. While this is incredible now, this kind of success will not last. If the leagues centers develop into better faceoff men Oslo will see their huge offensive zone pressure advantage evaporate. If this happens Oslo needs to develop offensive weapons. Currently they do not have a player in the top 15 in scoring. They have a mediocre power play sitting fifth in the league at 22%. The Storm need to figure out how to score before centers around the league figure out how to win face-offs. diamond_ace 3,112
Boring team. You know who else is considered boring? Chelsea, who just won the Premier League. If Oslo can get results like they do, I'll be boring every year. Good for Chelsea and all but that isn't the end-all-be-all of football. Sixersfan594 247
Content 3/3 - I feel like our team is very solid defensively but we need someone to kind of break the ice. We're missing that last piece to get us up to 3 goals a game. But we're amazing defensively, I love it. Grammar 2/2 - I could nitpick things for flow, but no need. why, leading = why. Leading scoring averaging = scoring, averaging Appearance 1/1 - Yeah Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/21866-claimedlooking-deeper-into-oslo%E2%80%99s-success-final-66/#findComment-242347 Share on other sites
