Wylde to Calgary

Calgary, AB -- It's been an interesting week and a half of roster makeover for the Calgary Wranglers. First, Jackson Miller and Nicholas Karlsson were shipped out of town. Then, Bismarck Koenig signed a free agent contract - a move that seems to have paid dividends for Calgary, considering he's tied for the league lead in goals. Then, surprisingly, young defenseman Michael Clardy announced his intention to retire after the season.

 

However, all of those moves may seem like a prelude to this: Calgary has traded for renowned defenseman Jake Wylde from the Quebec City Meute, where he had signed an extension before the season.

 

Wylde has been known as the best defenseman in the league for the past couple of seasons, winning the Labatte Trophy for each of the past two seasons. In seven years with Helsinki and Quebec, though, Wylde has yet to receive a ring. Calgary is hoping it can gain the defenseman a championship in his final chance.

 

"I couldn't be happier with this move. Every goaltender wants a star defenseman in front of him," Calgary goaltender Hans Wingate told the media after the trade was announced. "We have had a solid core for a couple of years now, but I think the addition of Wylde takes our defense to heights I couldn't have even imagined before the season.

 

Currently, the Wranglers are 6-2-1, sitting first in the North American conference with 13 points. With Wylde, however, the team looks to make a serious play for the Victory Cup, which it has won only once in the past 25 seasons. And maybe, just maybe, the shot at being the league's first back-to-back champs in 20 seasons just got a needed boost.
