Hybrid1486 577
Greg Clegane...He's Good The VHL season is hitting the stretch run, and some players are starting to separate from the pack and earn some individual recognition. Among the goaltenders, there is one player who has risen to the cream of the crop, but it's not the one anybody would have suspected. Retiring veterans Niklaus Mikaelson and Brock Waldron have been solid, while rising stars Blake Campbell, Hans Wingate, and Callum Sinclair have struggled to an extent. The one that truly hasn't yet is the youngest of the bunch, rookie Greg Clegane. Clegane was picked first overall in the most recent VHL Entry Draft, and was expected to eventually become the top goaltender in the league, if not the history of the league. Nobody really expected it to happen so quickly, however. Clegane is tops in the VHL with a .922 save percentage, and he's also tops (by a significant margin) with a 2.09 goals against average. How is the young star so far ahead of the game so quickly? A lot of it likely has to do with the team in front of him. Thomas O'Malley and Brady Stropko lead a very strong Titans team, while fellow top pick Phil Hamilton is playing ahead of his time as well. The veterans quickly taught the young players how the game works in the VHL, and they were quick to respond. Hamilton and Clegane, along with Marcel Faux and Aleksi Koponen, are going to make up the core of a Titans dynasty in the not-too-distant future. Of course, given Helsinki's placement at the top of the standings by ten points and the likely first-round bye that awaits them, it's entirely possible that the future is now. Another reason for Clegane's dominance could be the experience his agent has with star goaltenders. Victor was once the driving force behind Vase Trikamaki, a standout goalie for the New York Americans and (briefly) Titans some thirty seasons ago. While it has been a long time, some of the tricks that go into becoming a great goaltender in the VHL could have easily remained with the old coot, allowing him to pass them down to the young Clegane and shape him into the star he's becoming. Finally, there's the healthy competition with his brother. Sandro Clegane was selected by the Cologne Express with the fourth pick of the draft, and is currently residing in Moscow with the Red Wolves of the VHLM. Sandro's relative weakness, coupled with the fact that the Express still have Waldron for the remainder of the season, led to it being unnecessary to rush him into the VHL right away. Greg, with the sibling rivalry as motivation, is using his one season head start to rack up some huge numbers and (probably) some individual and/or team hardware before Sandro even has a chance to compete. Whatever the reason, Greg Clegane is the best goaltender the VHL has to offer right now. Barring some late-season collapse or a rise from one of the retiring veterans, He's a favorite to be named the league's top rookie as well as the top goaltender. It's also pretty likely that the Titans will have a lot of success in the playoffs, possibly even taking home the Continental Cup this season. If they do, Clegane will be a big reason for that, if not the biggest.
