The Young Stars game is coming up for the VHL and VHLM. In this article, we will take a look at 12 players (6 forwards, 4 defensemen, 2 goalies) who should be a lock to make it onto the roster.

Forwards

  1. Sir William Covington III, HC Davos/Saskatoon The top center in the VHLM right now was the 4th overall pick last year. While he may make headlines for his questionable additude, he is just as capable of making headlines with his scoring ability. Covington is a high powered shooter who has put up 102 points so far this year, good enough for second in the league. He should have a guaranteed spot as a top player in the Young Stars game.
  2. Unassisted, Yukon Once again, the legendary Yukon Rush center has popped up in the news. This charismatic player is impossible to forget, due to his spectacular scoring touch and his sound two way game. Unassisted has used his skills this season to rack up 95 points and 110 hits. There is no doubt that this young center will be a lottery pick this year, and therefore he deserves a place in the Young Stars game.
  3. Kendrick Cole, Ottawa Cole has been the best right wing prospect in a deep pool this year. He has 65 points so far and could be the first winger off the board this upcoming draft. He's not the most physical player, but he can hold his own, and he rarely gets knocked around like the other top forwards have this year. VHL GMs should get a glimpse of what he can do in the Young Stars game.
  4. David Hamilton, Toronto/Ottawa Playing left wing next to Cole is the S47 5th overall pick. Despite missing the first 7 games of the year, Hamilton is eleventh in the VHLM in points with 64. As close as you come to veteran leadership in the VHLM, He is leading the charge for the Lynx to win back to back. No doubt that David Hamilton deserves to be on the roster for this event.
  5. Dope Fiend, Oslo The Fiend is another great 2 way player on this list. Dope is a high volume shooter, currently fourth in the league with 343 shots on net. While his shooting percentage has been low, that is expected to change, which should drastically increase his already impressive 26 goals. As the work starts to show, so too should an appearance in the Young Stars game.
  6. Pavel Komarov, Oslo Komarov isn't on this list for his offense. 58 points is nothing to laugh at, but there are better offensive guys. What makes Pavel an elite VHLM forward is his incredible defensive presence. Komarov is a pass first kind of guy with a heavy hit, being second among all forwards with 129. Any other participants in the Young Stars game better watch their backs when this physical forward is on the ice.

Defensemen

  1. Black Velvet, Yukon How could you not include the projected 1st overall pick and VHLM MVP? Black Velvet leads the league in goals, points, shots, and power play points. He may not be the most defensive minded defenseman, but he is far from a liability, able to break up plays with ease. It's a sure thing that Velvet will be put on the Young Stars roster, and everyone expects a great showing from him.
  2. Felipe Rodriguez, Quebec City/Saskatoon Rodriguez is one of the most complete players on this list. Drafted third overall last season, he is showing that he will be a great addition to the Meute next year. His 93 points are fourth most in the league, and he currently leads the league in blocked shots with 134 and has put up 99 hits. Felipe will be a big hit in the Young Stars game, and soon the VHL.
  3. Cian Mercer, Ottawa Mercer is the best playmaker in the S48 Draft, posting a VHLM leading 68 assists. His goal scoring is a little suspect, but that will develop over time. One thing Mercer doesn't need to work on is his defensive talents. He can lay the body down on opponents, and has a knack for getting in front of opposing shots on goal as well. Cian  might be the best pure defensive talent available, and he will be able to show VHL GMs that in the Young Stars game
  4. Sam Weaver, Stockholm/Bratislava Sam Weaver came to Bratislava in a midseason trade and has continued to do what makes him special: be efficient. The 8th overall pick in the draft, Weaver may not impress you with anything, but he has great hockey IQ. He doesn't take Ill advised shots, plays sound fundamental defense, and knows how to play physical. VHL GMs will be able to get a glimpse of what this defender will be doing in Stockholm next year.

Goalies

  1. Artom Zhumbayev, Cologne/Bratislava To say that second overall pick in last year's draft has high expectations would be an understatement. Zhumbayev has posted a .911 save percentage and played exceptionally well, even when the Watchmen were playing poorly. Goalies that you can rely on to carry your team are hard to come by, so Artom is a great addition to any team
  2. Jakab Holik, Saskatoon Jakab, like Artom, struggled at the beginning of the season with a poor team. But once new Saskatoon GM Austin Dwyer came in, Holik has become a powerhouse, raising his save percentage by .004% and getting second in the league with six shutouts. He also leads the league in time on ice and assists. Jakab Holik will go into the Young Stars game and try to prove that he is worth a lottery selection

Very nicely done, especially for your first media spot.  Unfortunately, you were wrong about me.  I was a huge dud in the young guns game. :( Overall, nice write up for each player listed and nice use of actual numbers to back up your claims.

Maybe you should write more often now.  Keep up the good work.
