jRuutu 2,464
As I´m looking myself from the mirror, it´s starting to be obvious that I´m not the same guy who I was years ago when I first started playing in VHL. The high level of competition in the league and my playing style is starting to take a toll on me. I cant skate as fast as I used to, I was never a great skater, but now it´s really starting to look like I´m one of the slowest on the ice. You can still see the grace and elegance on my skating, but the raw power and explosiveness is not there anymore. That just means I need to make sure I position myself correctly in order to make up for that lack of speed. Sounds fairly easy, but it´s not that easy to do. Some players make it look easy, but just like everything in hockey, takes a lot of practice to be in the right place most of the time. I´m much better in that now than for example three seasons ago. That is going to be the biggest obstacle for me personally in the upcoming season, how quickly I manage to adjust to the speed of the game? The speed is the same as not so long ago, but I´m not. Getting older is not all bad, I can and know how to enjoy playing hockey more than ever before! The fact that I might have to retire soon makes me appreciate everything that much more. The time we spent in the practice and all the away trips with the whole team just being together and having fun is something that I´m going to miss when watching the games from TV. Now it´s not the time to spend too much time thinking about the retirement, it´s time to focus on the new season and into another journey into the playoffs! It´s going to be a challenging year for sure. Everybody wants to win the cup winners so there is not going to be easy games for us. Need to be able to bring our A game every night in order to even make it into playoffs again. I like our team and chances though, we got a solid mix of different kinds of players and playing styles here. If we manage to find the same flow and energy we had in the team last year, it´s going to be a great year again for New York! The excitement about new season is not the only thing that has been giving me motivation lately, I signed a new contract with New York! That means that I´m going to finish my career here, in the same team I started my VHL journey years ago. I´m going to do all I can to make sure we get the chance to lift the cup again this year and of course in the future!
