Joanna Åkerfeldt Rookie Profile

by John Johnson and Sammy Samson

940x.jpg

JJ: Well helllloooo hockey fans. John Johnson here with my buddy Sammy Samson for the John & Sammy Hockey Talks. Today we're going to discuss a player who just appeared on the VHL's radar, namely Joanna Åkerfeldt, who's all the way from Göteborg, Sweden.

SS: Yeah, except from having a ridiculous name, not much is known about her so bear with us here. We'll do our best to give you accurate information about what kind of a player she is.

JJ: I heard my good Sam that her name was pronounced "Okerfelt". The "Å" actually sounds like the "O" in assho…

SS: Okay, I got the idea! Let's move on. So Joanna is 18, 5 foot 11 and weights 165 lbs… or so she says.

JJ: Ha ha ha ha.

SS: Whatever.

JJ: Well, I think you unwillingly pointed out one of her biggest weaknesses, which is her size. She might have had success in whatever swedish league she played in, but it's fair to wonder if she's going to be able to compete in the VHL being this small.

SS: Well, my mom would argue that 5 foot 11 is pretty tall for a woman. By the way, the league is called "Hockeyettan".

JJ: Yes, for a woman, but not for a goalie. We say hi to your mother, by the way.

SS: I watched some of her matches to prepare for this and I noticed that she actually has an amazing reaction time, which compensates for what she can't cover in the net when she stands still. It might look like she can't cover much of her net but she's great at following the puck and reacting accordingly.

JJ: I know you watched her, Sam, we did this together you silly goose.

SS: Our listeners don't know that.

JJ: We also noticed that she was good at controlling rebounds. That's always a good sign for such a young goaltender, don't you agree, Sam?

SS: Absolutely. In the few matches we were able to watch, we saw that Joanna would be able to cover the puck quite often, which allowed her to control the pace of the game to give her teammates, and herself, a chance to breathe a little. You did, however, use a word that worries me a bit as far as she is concerned, "young".

JJ: Indeed. I'm still not convinced that she'll be able to control the game like this in the VHL, at least not in her first few seasons.

SS: Of course not. The VHL is a much faster league and dare I say, with much more talented players. Her lack of experience will no doubt be a big handicap for her at the beginning. She is, however, a hard working lass so she should learn quickly how to overcome her weaknesses.

JJ: I hope so for whoever will take the risk to draft her but we all know a goalie takes more time to reach their peak than other players... Anything else to add, Sam?

SS: Well, I thought it would be interesting to point out that she rarely goes out of her net to play the puck and seems really uncomfortable doing it. She tried a few times in the games we watched but nothing came out of it.

JJ: Right you are. All teams love it when their goalie can almost behave like a third defenseman and make the first pass which will take the action out of their defensive zone quickly. Perhaps this is an aspect of her game that she could develop but for now, her skills in that department are seriously lacking.

SS: Anyway, it'll certainly be interesting to see how she behaves in a more competitive league.

JJ: I agree. That's all for this episode of the John & Sammy Hockey Talks. We'll talk to y'all another time.

In summary:

Pros: Reaction time, rebound control, work ethic

Cons: Size, experience, doesn't play the puck

NOTE: I wrote it like this so it would be more fun to read but if this is an incorrect format and will make me lose points, I'll rewrite it in a more conventional style. I think all the info is there, though.

This was a good read but looks more like a media spot to me, don't think the rookie profile is supposed to be an interview like this.

If you would like I can move this to the media spot section where you could claim 6 points for it :autism:

Well, the info thread doesn't say there's a specific format but you're the commish so if you tell me it's no good, then okay I'll use this as a media spot and work on a more conventional rookie profile :)

If you have a look in the rookie profile rubric section it lays out what the format is a little clearer (assuming you hadn't already seen it). Good article though, awesome to see you getting stuck in straight away

I mean, she's got the 3 pros and 3 cons. Would just have to verify word count on them. I have no issue with reviewing this as a Rookie Profile if no one else does. This seems like more work than the other format actually.

The rookie profile rubric doesn't specify how it needs to be done, just what needs to be included unless I'm missing something.

I had a look at this but like I said, if that's not okay, I'll take eaglesfan's offer and have this moved to the media section and will redo it later. It's not a problem.

I don't really care that much, I guess this is up to @DollarAndADream as he is head grader?

I guess so....

This is a different approach to it, but it has all the requirements of the rubric, so I think it's fine. It's not done traditionally how other people have, since this is an interview, but it has all the required info so it's all good.

Just like the other ways it has been done, it includes all the information like height, weight, hometown, etc. It also has 3 pros and cons, and they're colour coded so you don't have to go looking for them.

I can't necessarily say why it can't be done this way. The rubric doesn't say you can't. It does say RP's have to be a "scouting report" of sorts, but this one of those "of sorts" as well.

Great seeing new members think outside the box and get there feet wet right away. It's this kind of enthusiasm and energy this league needs from new members. Welcome and I hope you'rea big name soon :)

@enigmatic

Claim 8 TPE for this. Like everyone most a few people above said, it's nice/refreshing to see a different approach to the rookie profile.

Word count was on point, 701, well beyond the 500 minimum. All three pros and all three cons are there and explained. Height, weight, age and all that are there. Everything checks out as far as I'm concerned. It's a little difficult to pinpoint the word count for the pros and cons but I think it's fine.

P.S. Don't let the first few comments discourage you from doing things differently. If we all did things exactly the same, it'd be incredibly boring.
