A quick visit to Cologne.

Even though the Cologne sports paper did a rookie profile on the latest addition to the Express, it turns out Pietro Maximoff will never wear the Cologne green. He did not get offered a contract by Greg Harbinson, general manager off the Express. During the draft it already became clear that Cologne was looking into trading the pick as their intended target was no longer available. The draft got hold up and in the end the Express decided to select Maximoff, which turns out to just have been as trade bait.

Less than 24 hours later the Cologne Express have already traded Maximoff, who is now en-route to Riga, who jumped quickly on the opportunity to add Maximoff to their roster. At the cost of a Season 50 first round pick, the Reign felt they struck a nice deal. In talks before the draft, Steve Smeall felt like Maximoff would love the chance to help Riga grow towards a cup and he had no trouble saying goodbye to next year's first rounder in order to get the Romanian winger on board.

Riga will have a long road ahead of him, but Maximoff wants to give Riga his best and shortly after being traded he made known he would like to stay here as long as it takes to get the Reign on top again (or when he is no longer needed and shipped out for a new rebuild). The Reign might be a work in progress, but Maximoff likes that he will get an opportunity here to show what he is capable off. It will be hard work, but he will give it his best.

The agency which Maximoff represents already has a history with Riga, goaltender Remy LeBeau openly applied at Riga at time of his draft. However the Reign opted for winger Josef Heiss Jr, who would retire a few seasons later (after winning a cup with them). Everyone know how it ended for LeBeau who was the cornerstone of a Toronto franchise and lead them to a cup in Season 37. Almost 20 seasons after LeBeau got drafted, Riga finally got someone from the Green agency. While Maximoff won't be off the caliber of LeBeau and O'Malley, they do have the loyalty the agency represents. Their clients never have been into free agency and only O'Malley tested it once (which did get him his fourth cup).

With Titan Kronos and Pietro Maximoff added to their roster and having goaltender Ilya Kopralkov also coming up, there definitely is a youth movement coming up in the Latvian capital. And it's up to Bronson Faux to guide this rookies to early success next season. It might be a hard task to reach the playoffs, but without a Season 50 first rounder the Reign want to try to end up as high as possible, so let's hope for some free agents wanting to grow with the youngsters on their road to success. Probably nobody saw the trade coming, but the Riga fans can be happy how this draft turned out for them.

Who was Cologne's original target? Surely you were high on the list.

They had a list of three people for #5 and I wasn't on it, you were on top ;)

So I guess they figured my value now would be higher then a couple of seasons of welfare into my career.

But it does give me some motivation to proof 'em wrong
