David Hamilton Rookie Profile

David Hamilton is the least talented of the three Hamilton brothers who have made their mark on the VHL. This is no secret. Born and raised in Gerrards Cross, England, David practiced with his older brothers Phil and Jeff and somehow managed to develop his skills just enough to become, at best, a fringe player in the VHL. At 6 foot 3 inches and weighing 210 pounds, his stature is significant enough to not be overwhelmed on defence which is where he plays. He grew up playing forward, but quickly realized he wasn't able to be a prolific scorer, and shortly after being drafted by the Toronto Legion he switched to defence. He currently in is his second season in the VHL playing for the Colonge Express.

Pros

Shooting: It's a stretch to say that scoring is a pro for David, but he does possess a good shot. It's enough to make it through from the point and cause havoc. He will blast a 100mph slap shot from the point top corner, but he can throw a wrister through traffic. It will be enough to get him some points on the powerplay.

Puck Retrieval: David has a quick stick which he uses effectively. He can knock the puck off forwards' sticks quite easily, as well as take the puck out of the corner. He uses his good body positioning to shield the route to the puck so he can collect it before anyone else. Given his lack of strength, which will be discussed shortly, this is an essential skill for him to hone should he wish to stay in the VHL.

Offensive Instincts: Growing up playing as a forward, David has a very natural sense for the offensive zone. He is great at stepping up to create odd man rushes as well as pinching down low to keep the pressure on the opposition. From time to time, when he sees ice on the powerplay, he has the unique ability to drift into the slot which, as a defenseman, is unusual and creates certain scoring options that are not normally available.

Cons

Strength: Even though David stands at 6 foot 3 inches and weighs 210 pounds, he is easily pushed off the puck. As a result, his hit total will be a lot lower than expected from a defenseman. Being out-muscled in front of the net is also a big issue as if goalies give up rebounds he will struggle to clear them away.

Passing: You pretty much know that if the puck reaches David, it's not really going to go anywhere else other than on the net. His inability to find the tapes of sticks leads to his play style being too predictable. His passes out of the zones usually are intercepted or go for icing. He has to resort to the chip out of the zone in order to be effective.

Checking: David is scared to lay a hand on anyone. His lack of strength gives him no confidence in his ability to hit the opposition. He will shy away from hits and is not an imposing figure on the ice. Players know they can try and dangle him because they won't get hit.
