Name: Daryl Dortch

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 266 lbs

Position: Right Wing

Handedness: Right

Hometown: Chicago, Illinois

Daryl Dortch was born and raised in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.  He grew up watching players like Donald Brashear and Jarome Iginla, players he could relate to. Both of those players shaped the way young Daryl thought the game should be played. He decided to get out of the Chicago and attend Robert Morris just outside of Pittsburgh, there, he was finally able to play the sport he loved so much.

Pros

Power:

Let’s face it, Dortch is a massive guy to see skating around. He uses his size well, too, as he has a very physical edge to his game. He is very strong on and off the puck. He can get in the corners and power his way out of tough situations as well as he can lay the lumber on an opposing forward coming into the zone. When he gets going, steer clear, he’s one of the best at delivering open ice hits.

Defensive Awareness:

Dortch plays with the mindset that “Defense wins championships.” Whether it’s from his beloved Chicago Bears and their Monsters of the Midway or his college coaches, he has always been a fan of playing defense. He plays defense not just by knocking opposing players off the puck but also with good stick positioning and handling.

Dedication:

As with the other VHL player in the EPA, Dortch has shown he can be a gym rat. The EPA has proven that they can produce dedicated players in the VHL and it doesn’t appear things will be much different with Dortch. Look for Dortch to rack up a decent amount of training hours despite being the second player represented in the VHL by the Evryday Player Agency.

Cons

Experience:

Or lack thereof in this case. Daryl Dortch topped out as a second line player in college and that wasn’t until his senior year. This guy is as green as they come.  This may be a big red flag going into the VHLM. He has played 156 games at the collegiate level, only 39 of them with second line time. The rest of the games he was relegated to a grinder role on the third and fourth lines.

Skating:

As we mentioned, Dortch is a big guy and as such, he’s not very quick on his feet. He’s not going to be out skating anyone on a breakaway or chasing anyone down to prevent one. This is something he has tried to work on but it is still a work in progress to say the least.

Passing:

Dortch has good stick handling for a big guy but he has a tendency to be more of a shoot first player when he does get the puck. He also tends to make bad passes when he does attempt them. Look for this as a top area for improvement along with his skating.

Player Projection

Dortch should be a top 6 power forward at the VHLM level. He’s not going to blow anyone away with his scoring prowess but he could surprise people occasionally. He will rack up the hits which may contribute to higher penalty minutes at the next level. Should work on skating and passing as he progresses to be more than a role player.

Review:

I'm expecting Dortch to wreck some folks. Extra dedication, you say? I'm interested in finding out what you mean. Your cons are a little disheartening I must say lol. Excited to see some power forward beat downs!
