Max von Hohenzollern Talks About His Season

In Part One of this article we took a look back at the trade that brought Max von Hohenzollern to the Cologne Expres and asked him about his thoughts about his VHL-debut and the fact that it was with a completely different team than he would've thought a year ago. But now, let's dive into the season itself. How did it go for the young German and his new team?

In a European Conference that was seen as the weaker one of the two this season, Cologne went on a tear right out of the gate and the Express started the year with an impressive winning streak despite the fact that they were considered an underdog team by most experts. The main reason for that impressive start was the strong play of their first line of Niels Skovgaard, John Sleeman and Max von Hohenzollern that had found chemistry surprisingly quickly.

"I really felt at home here in Cologne from the moment I arrived and I got along great with everyone, but I sure didn't expect us to start as hot as we did. For some reason the chemistry between me, Niels and John was there right away", Max told us in an interview, "Those two are obviously much more experienced and skilled than I am which made it a lot easier for a rookie like myself, defenders focused on them a little more leaving me with some extra space on the ice, and luckily I was able to capitaliize on that a few times."

While the Express cooled off a bit over the course of the season and dropped to second in the Conference, Hohenzollern did not. Along with his linemates he kept racking up the points and currently ranks 11th in league scoring with 49 goals and 40 assists in 65 games. He will likely fall just short of hitting the coveted 100-point mark, but it still looks like he has all but locked up the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy for Rookie of the Year.

"This isn't about individual accolades but of course I am still happy and somewhat proud about how this season went. As a player who had to spent to extra seasons in juniors before being given a chance in the VHL, I sure didn't expect to start as hot as I did. But I'm also aware that a lot of this success comes from the fact that I have great teammates who drew a lot of the oppositions attention and thereby gave me opportunities to succeed. That probably won't be the case again in the future since I'm not an unknown commodity anymore. We also got to play against a lot of rebuilding teams in our conference and I expect that to change as well."
