Maximal Pietro

Nobody expected this to happen, but the Riga Reign captain almost doubled his point total of the previous season this year. After scoring just 74 points in Season 51, he went on a scoring spree and ended the season with 139 points total, two points more than Unassisted, who looked like the prime candidate to win this year’s scoring title. With help of his line mates Shawn Muller (who ended 4th on the scoring list with 124 points) and Vincent Virtanen (who also ended above a point per game as 25th) he managed he ended his end of season surge to go past Unassisted on the last game off the season.

‘I am sorry to Unassisted who was very deserving and a great player this year. But offensively things just started to click with the Reign. I couldn’t have done this without my team and I want to thank Riga for the opportunity they gave me to achieve this. Scoring 69 goals is insane, and something that has not been done in a while. So I am happy and grateful to have accomplished this.’

Pietro just mentioned the 69 goal mark and he raises a good point there. In the VHL Record section ‘Most Goals Scored’, nobody has entered the top 25 since Season 35, when Michal Wozniak scored 72 times for the Calgary Wranglers. With his 69 goal performance, Maximoff enters the list on position 19th, shared with Guillaume Latendresse. Maximoff had his hopes up to become the highest ranked Riga Reign player, but is still outclassed by Tarik Saeijs and Max Kroenenburg with 71 and 70 goals respectively in Season 20.

The performance has made Maximoff a happy man, he never expected anything like this to happen in his career and he hopes this might attract other top players to come and play in Latvia next season. After claiming the European Conference for the second time in a row he hopes Riga can once again surprise people in the playoffs. Last season it resulted in a surprising cup win versus the Toronto Legion, who have not made the playoffs this time around. With the North American conference being so stacked, it seems likely that the favorite for the cup will be the team that comes out on top after the North American rounds. Europe, whether it is Cologne or Riga, will definitely be the underdog in the final. Whatever happens, happens and whatever will happen for next season, nobody knows. But being in the easier conference, it would be nice to get some extra teammates interested in a quest for the cup. We showed this year how easy it was to clinch the top spot with a one line team. The Riga Reign will be ready for the future, become part of history.
