hedgehog337 3,483
Name: Guntis Petenis Birthplace: Jelgava, Latvia Height: 6'8'' Weight: 487 lbs Drafted: 7th OV pick by Seattle Bears in S51 draft Some info. The VHL site has Petenis as 250 pound player, but don't buy into that - he is waaay more fatter and bigger. He was 13, when he took the hockey for the first time and after that, he realized he can actually turn into a decent checking machine, although he already was a fat teen. He came into the VHL's world in S49 and shortly after that Moscow took a chance on him. He already made a strong statement in his debut season, registering 210 hits in 62 games. The next season was even better for Gunča - 400 hits in 70 games + record(?) 26 hits in one game in a playoff game against Yukon, although that game went to 6 OT. After that, he was went to Seattle where he amassed 280 hits in S51 and 245 hits in his sophomore season. 1. Physical Play It's not a secret that Guntis' priority is sending bodies against the boards and he's doing a good job with it. Well, I feel sorry for everyone who was checked by Petenis - imagine a 487 pound fatso who is skating on your way. Ouch. Looking forward to see more painful body checks from probably the fattest person from Latvia as he's still working on that. 2. Speed I think the skating skill is an important thing if you want to be a good body checker. Guntis is pretty decent on skating which is very surprising if you're looking at his body. I know some guys with the overweight problems are playing on high level, like Dustin Byfuglien. But Guntis is on another level - while other >400 lbs players can't get their bodies up from the couch, he is literally flying on the ice, like 487 pounds never existed. And the most scary thing is - he isn't finished yet. 3. Defence Yes, I know - he's a defensive defenseman. But still it's not so easy to defend the own net on the VHL level. But Guntis proved he can do that. He's decent at blocking shots and his good +/- ratio [second best on team in S51; fourth best in S52] shows us that he's no slouch. 1. Lack of discipline Another obvious fact. It's not hard to injure a player while you're a 487 pound fattie and you're skating well, but Guntis still needs to calm his temper if he doesn't wants to screw Seattle. Also, he has a bad habit - he likes to provoke players for a fight. Only couple of them accepted his challenge so far and I hope this list won't grow, because this is another thing that can lessen Seattle's chances. 2. Lack of big play experience He performs well in the regular season, but when it comes to playoffs, he suddenly disappears. Lots of mistakes, PIM's and inconsistensy - this is Petenis during playoff games. Of course there are no weak opponents in post season, but being afraid of big challenge not an option for Gunča and for Seattle either. He needs to step up his game up if he doesn't wants to be just a regular season player. 3. Inconsistensy at work ethic He's doing better than the only Continental Cup winner from Latvia, Benjamin Zeptenbergs. However, it's still not a World Class level of the work ethic - he can be lazy sometimes and take a week off. He might be one of the best DD right now, but why not doing more than he's doing now? That's the question we probably won't find the answer. So? He on pace for being a defensive force and I think he will be alright. He just needs to be calmer and stop paying much attention to an unnecessary things and he will have a good chance to lift a Continental Cup in the near future. 8 TPE goes to Petenis. *The topic's name contains a reference from Harley Davidson's Fat Boy model. DollarAndADream 3,357
Review: Petenis is my favourite fattie. Maybe a close second would be Oskars Harumpf from some seasons ago. Good RP, buddeh. Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/37551-claimedthe-fat-boy-guntis-petenis-rp-12/#findComment-411121 Share on other sites
