Helsinki forward Rudolph Schmeckeldorf goes 5-hole on Calgary goalie Jacob

 

CALGARY, Alberta - The first career VHL goal for Rudolph Schmeckeldorf certainly came earlier than he, or anybody else for that matter, expected. After only scoring 16 goals in the VHLM last season against some less-than-stellar goalies, more than a handful of experts expected Schmeckeldorf's goal totals in his rookie season to be able to counted on one hand. The goal would have impossible without the help of defensemen Hudson Abbott and Maksym Barnyashev, who both helped move the puck through the neutral zone to find a wide-open Schmeckeldorf ready to be sprung on a breakaway from the blue line. Not a noted fancy stickhandler, Schmeckeldorf saw an opening between Jacob's legs and placed a perfect shot there to give the Titans a 2-1 lead at 1:46 of the third period, a lead that they would keep for the whole game, giving the young forward not only his first goal, but his first game-winning goal as well.
