TheLastOlympian07 2,388
Team Mercenaries are always a team to watch as they were players who were not picked by their respective countries in the World Cup. It is mostly a very young team this season for Team Mercs who don't have the luxury of Sandro Clegane who would always be left out in favor of Hans Wingate and Greg Clegane. So without further adieu here is how the current edition of the Mercs did this season with their respective VHL/M teams this season. Forwards Fredinamijs Krigars had a very strong rookie season with the Riga Reign this season. He scored 38 goals and assisted on 45 goals for 83 points. This was good enough to finish 2nd in rookie scoring just 4 points behind John Locke. Krigars will be a vital part of the rebuild in Riga in the coming seasons. His teammate and fellow rookie, Marc-Andre Leblanc finished 3rd in rookie scoring with 40 goals and 34 assists for 74 points. This was also 3rd on Riga in scoring. They should be a very good duo going forward for this Riga Reign club. These next two players are also teammates as both Sami Zayn and Daryl Dortch were named to the roster. Zayn and Dortch did not have the best of seasons playing for the Titans with 34 points and 30 points respectively but they just quietly played their roles as 2nd/3rd line players who chipped in offence where they could. Maybe with a bigger role in the World Cup they will show the Helsinki front office they are ready for the prime time in the VHL. Both players are coming off a championship season with the Titans as well. They could do the rare double if Mercs can pull off a win in the World Cup. Shawn Gretzky is coming off a nice season in Davos as the only player other than Pablo to practice week in and week out. He would finish 5th in rookie scoring with 32 goals and 28 assists for 60 points. Pretty nice for a player who was focused on game in and game out. Gretzky will be getting a new teammate next season in the form of Takashi Fujimoto who played the season out in Las Vegas this season. Fujimoto had a very strong season with 50 goals and 51 assists for 101 points. Gretzky can't wait for the winger to get called up to the VHL and set him up this upcoming season as well as the world cup. Defenseman Pavel Komorov who came over from Davos, is going to be counted on as the top defenseman for the Mercs. He had a very solid season in Quebec with 5 goals and 39 assists for 49 points. He was solid as a number 3 defenseman behind Titan Kronos and Fabio Jokinen. Alexander Thrower was also named to the roster and much like Komorov he was seen as the teams 3rd defenseman after Lee King Snatch and Tobias Klingberg. Thrower did have a very nice season as did most of the Stockholm Vikings with 12 goals and 58 assists for 70 points on the season. Thrower is looking to get back on the winning track after Stockholm lost to the eventual champion Helsinki Titans. Roman Sokolov who is another rookie to make this team, had a very nice season finishing 4th with 22 goals and 42 assists for 64 points. He led the team in scoring as the Legion are going through a rebuild. Sokolov is going to be one of the biggest pieces of the rebuild and he surely proved his worth in his rookie season. Can he keep it up in the World Cup and in future seasons? We shall see. A surprise inclusion to this team was Nicodemus Raven who spent the season with the Ottawa Lynx. Raven had a very decent season with 16 goals and 27 assists for 43 points in just 64 games in the VHLM. With a good performance, Raven could propel his draft stock as he looks to get drafted by a VHL team this off-season. Goaltenders Jacob was one of two goaltenders named to the Mercs roster. He had a very strong rookie season in Calgary this season with a record of 18-42-1 with a 0.928 save percentage and a 2.94 G.A.A. Not too shabby for a rookie on a rebuilding team. He also had 5 shutouts on the season. Finally we get to Astrid Moon, the goalie who had the most to prove this season after a disastrously bad season with Helsinki the season prior. He bounced back in a big way with a record of 43-19-9 with a 0.929 save percentage and a 1.48 G.A.A. He also tied the record of shutouts in a season with 20. With his playoff performance this season, he should garner some playoff MVP votes. Surely this is enough for him to start in the World Cup over Jacob right? There it is people, a quick breakdown of Team Mercenaries. They closely resemble Team North America in the past World Cup of Hockey for the NHL and co. A bunch of young players who look to prove that they can hang with the big boys.
