Claimed: Dispersal Draft offers new challenges.... [1/2]

Recommended Posts

The VHL is entering an era of uncertainty and although it is in good hands with the blue team that we currently have I would say there are still a lot of questions to be answered. First my big concern as a very biased GM is how the S59 Calgary pick will play out. Since I will have to be compensated for it, it does interest me to know what it will be. I assume it would just be a draft pick in a similar position to where they've picked recently. That is to say, a mid round pick. Take their average position the last three seasons or something like that. It isn't ideal, but it makes sense to me. A 4th or 5th pick in an eight team first round seems about right. The other question that concerns me is what players end up where. You can (as far as I know!) trade draft picks in the unique dispersal draft and there have been some conversations behind the scenes between myself and a few GM's. I got lucky to get the third pick and have had a few ideas running around in my head so far about what to do. To me, there are two superstars, franchise changing players in the draft. Chase Keller and Shawn Gretzky are two young(ish) players who have real franchise forward potential. The top two teams are New York and Seattle and it would seem to fit in to their windows of opportunity to go Keller first to the younger team and then Gretzky next to the competitive Bears.

At third overall, I am kind of stuck in a rock and a hard place. I want one of those two but since it seems unlikely (barring a trade of course) that I end up with one it seems like I will need to come up with a backup plan. I can go a few routes here on one hand I could take Cologne's first round pick which is (I think) the fifth overall. This would give me three first round picks in this draft and would, without a doubt, be the safe way of doing things. I can draft three solid Season 58 prospects and continue, to me, the by sheer numbers, domination of the S57, 58 and 59 draft classes.

I like being safe but I like taking risks when they come up. One such risk is taking goalie Shawn Brodeur. I have a goalie (Burger King who is well on his way and a GM player) but if I take Brodeur (as I maybe should have done in the draft!) I end up with King, Brodeur and current goalie DeGrath who was stellar this year and isn't slowing down too much. In this scenario I would have to retire Burger King (my second retirement in as many young players) lose all my TPE and all my work for him so far but I would gain a stud for the future and get to make a GM player at a position of need for my team. This was an immediate thought of mine during the draft last year but I decided to just make the trade I did with Chris rather then taking such a risk. I'm honestly unsure about what to do here. A few other options would be to take a older player like Motherfucker Sharpe or Marc Alexandre Leblanc. Truly though I think these are my two best options.

We’re still working out the specifics of the S59 pick you own but yes, chances are we will slide a bonus pick into the middle of the first round for you which would be 5th overall. That’s still subject to change but it’s what is likely right now as it’s both where they would likely fall and a fair system considering it’s dead centre of all the current teams drafting. Luckily for the league (though a shame for you I admit) is that is the only pick we need to concern ourselves with in S59.

Review:

That dispersal draft made things very interesting. I'm glad with what I got out of it, and I think heading forward, it has already benefited the league as a whole.

Also, the only thing I will say to knock this article is that you should have aligned it all to the middle and put a title at least. But good stuff.
