Quebec's Season In Retrospect [1/2]

Recommended Posts

Season 59 was an eye opener for the Meute, as the core of Ottawa's players graduated to the big club ( minus talented prospect Matt Denning who retired due to personal reasons) after having an outstanding S58 winning cup run, breaking numerous league and team records in the process.

Forming an all rookie cast with the exception of  swift skating defence  man Louth, a three year pro and 6'5" hulking forward Pat Bennington in his second season with the club Quebec is a young team in transition.

Expectations were low coming into S59 as the team previously lacked direction  due to the club having internal issues so Quebec was left hanging in limbo and the cupboards were bare prospect wise.

Interim GM/Coach Beavis had his hands full with the club due to the lack of experience on the team and the need for depth. With no other prospects available  until the season 60 draft Louth and Bennington had to take the lead.

Quebec struggled all season only winning an abysmal 6 games. Goals were hard pressed to come by but at times the club was able to hang in there so there were some positive signs.

The club scored a league low 102 goals while allowing 282 goals against and their farm goalie stood on his head facing at times 50 plus shots per game. Clearly the team needs a legitimate net minder along with extra help along the blue line. With the draft coming next week adding more rookie prospects hopefully Quebec management will get some good pieces to add to the puzzle. Some veteran help to mentor the teams youth and be a positive influence in the locker room would also be an added bonus.

There were some bright spots on the team this past season. Keaton Louth was steady as usual in the offensive department. He has averaged around 20 goals and fifty points his past three seasons. He also laid out 223 hits and blocked 177 shots.

Phil Bennington was also steady with 19 goals and 34 points and was also laying out a solid 204 hits. His game would rise to another level if he were to use his size more if he wants to be more effective.

Lavar Ball scored 8 goals and 26 points playing a steady game. If he keeps working on areas of his game Lavar will be an integral contributor to the teams success.

Adam Warlock had a solid first season contributing a solid 5 goals and 36 points. He also amassed 149 hits along with 208 shots blocked.

Lastly is David Kiaskov this years rookie of the year. He had a solid first season as well accumulating 22 goals and 42 points. He also led the team in hits with 243.

Seeing as Quebec didn't land the first spot in the draft lottery, they still have ample opportunity to acquire some solid draft picks. Within the next few seasons, look for the club to be competitive. As for now the team will go through growing pains but the future looks bright.
