Statistically Speaking -- Baxter's Year in Review [1/2]

Recommended Posts

With the Ottawa Lynx' season coming to a close, we here at Statistically Speaking decided to once again sit down with Lando Baxter and see how he felt his first season in the VHLM went. We'll try not to let Lando walk out on us this time, but no promises.

Statistically Speaking – First off, let me be the first media member to congratulate you on finishing #1 in points for the Ottawa Lynx!  Tell me how that makes you feel.  How much of a surprised was it?

Lando Baxter—Thank you.  Here is where your standard hockey player answers would fit in.  Stuff like “it was all my teammates”, “I only care if the team is winning” or “Stats are meaningless”.

Statistically Speaking – But we’re here to talk about stats, so…

Lando Baxter—*waves* Yeah I know.  I don’t like stock hockey answers.  I’m actually honoured.  This first year has been a blast.  I love helping my team win and….

Statistically Speaking – That sounds like a stock answer.

Lando Baxter—Well, it’s not—if it’s accurate.  I do think team stats are more important.  We lost in the semi-finals and that’s the most important take-away from this season.

Statistically Speaking – But you’re going to get drafted.  You’ll probably be in the VHL next season. How much loyalty can you have for a junior team?

Lando Baxter—You never played hockey did you?

Statistically Speaking – I played road hockey and some shinny on the local ice.

Lando Baxter—But never a team?  You’ve literally never been inside a hockey dressing room to play with a team?

Statistically Speaking – Why should that matter?

Lando Baxter— Because it does.  I’ve been on countless teams since the age of 7.  It’s a special thing that you don’t understand unless you experience it.  It’s an “us against them”.  It’s war.  It’s camaraderie that you can’t get anywhere else.

Statistically Speaking – Except in a real war.

Lando Baxter—should I leave now or…

Statistically Speaking –Sorry.  I get it.  You don’t like stock hockey answers unless you really believe them.

Lando Baxter— Yes.

Statistically Speaking –How about this question.  You were in the top 10 in scoring for defensemen, league-wide.

Lando Baxter—It’s nice, but Jokinen almost doubled me in points.

Statistically Speaking – You were also top-10 in Shots Blocked.

Lando Baxter—3rd on my team though.

Statistically Speaking – Top 9 in hits.

Lando Baxter—Goon doubled me there too.

Statistically Speaking – You were one of only 4 players to be in the top 10 in defenseman scoring and hitting and shot blocking.  Bastion Logan Mac Finsceal, Lukas Novacek & Jacob Smith were the others.

Lando Baxter— Really?  Huh.  Didn’t know that.  But most of us played for teams that didn’t have the puck very much.  It’s easy to get hits and blocks when you spend so much time in the defensive zone.

Statistically Speaking –There’s nothing significant you can take from your statistics this season?

Lando Baxter—nope.

Statistically Speaking –Okay last one: You have been mentioned in a few different mock drafts as a possibility for going in the top 10 in the upcoming VHL draft.  How does that feel?

Lando Baxter— Okay I’ll admit.  I couldn’t believe it. Shocked, really.  To be mentioned with all those great players is special.  No matter what I’ll be happy with whichever team chooses me.

Statistically Speaking –  /facepalm

Lando Baxter— Standard hockey answer?

Statistically Speaking –  Ya think?

Lando Baxter— but I believe it!

Thanks everyone for joining us again.  Lando Baxter is chock-full of hockey-isms.  Thing is--he believes them.
