Mid-Season S66 Mock Draft

:sea: 9. Seattle Bears (41-10-4)

Julius Freeman, Halifax 21st (LW)

54 games played, 24 goals, 43 assists, 67 points

At the tail end on the 1st round, with their 9th overall draft pick, the Seattle Bears will select Julius Freeman. Freeman fits into a trend that seems rather common in this season’s draft. He’s a big-bodied winger with outstanding offensive potential. His point totals haven’t been off the charts, which may come as a concern to some and therefore dropped him back a few spots, but the ability is there. Freeman’s a very well-rounded player, boasting high-end goalscoring as well as extremely accurate passing, not to mention above-average speed and stick handling abilities which compliment his touch in the offensive zone. Freeman is also a very unselfish player, who will always come back to defend his own net before trying to make himself look good.

:rig:8. Riga Reign (41-12-2)

Rhye Tyr, Halifax 21st (D)

54 games played, 7 goals, 47 assists, 54 points

With their first choice, the Bears are going to add to their already impressive defensive core and select the offensive dynamo from Halifax, Rhye Tyr. Selecting Tyr will instantly complete Riga’s top 4. He was the 16th overall pick of the 21st and burst onto the scene, leading them to their current first place position. Tyr has scored five of his seven goals on the powerplay and would complement the second pairing of the Reign nicely. His vision and ability to know where to be at all times, coupled with his tremendous puck handling, allows him to see and feel the game like a true #1 defenceman should. Tyr, while no slouch when it comes to skating, will need to continue to improve in that area if he wants to keep up with the big boys.

:oldtor: 7) Toronto Legion (34-16-7)

         RW Shawnomir Jagr, Saskatoon Wild

         34 games played, 41 goals, 36 assists, 77 points

At number seven, Toronto takes the large, goal scoring wing Jagr. At 6’3, 230 pounds, he’s used his large frame to compliment his well-rounded skill set. Despite his even point totals, this kid is a goal scorer through and through and projects to be just that in the big leagues. He also can puck handle and skate extremely well for a player of his stature, and his defensive positioning is on par with the top players in this class. Jagr could look to work on his playmaking, as being able to dish it out as well as putting the puck in the net is something all teams will look for come draft day.

:hel:6) Helsinki Titans  (32-22-2)

         LW Dimitri Volosenkov, Halifax 21st

         54 games played, 31 goals, 35 assists, 65 points

What’s this? Another member of the 21st? You’d think they were the 1st place team or something! Oh? They are? Okay, carry on… Volosenkov, the only Russian on our list today is not affected by the classic “Russian Factor”. The dude is no slouch in his own end, but that’s not even the best part of his game. With 31 goals on the year, he’s shown a real knack for scoring big goals. He’s also got four game-winners already. A player who comes pre-wired to work hard in his own end and score big goals? Any team would be happy to have him, and the Titans will be the landing spot for this Russian sniper.

:nya:5) New York Americans (27-25-5)

RW Mikko Aaltonen, Las Vegas Aces

        54 games played, 31 goals, 31 assists, 66 points

The Finnish Blur. Aaltonen is one of the fastest skaters on our list (#2 behind Mars) and uses that to his advantage. Starting the season on the lowly Philadelphia Reapers, Aaltonen was moved to Vegas and hasn’t slowed down. With eight goals in as many games in Vegas, it’s a SIN (get it? Vegas? Sin City???) that he didn’t start out here. Look for Aaltonen to keep up the numbers as he helps the Ace’s battle for the final playoff spot. His point totals might not be up there with the HHH’s of the world, but his rise up this draft class has been astronomical and he appears to just be heating up.

:hcd: 4) HC Davos Dynamo (25-27-4)

         LW Kari Jurri, Houston Bulls

         54 games played, 36 goals, 41 assists , 77 points

The man with the highest scoring (yes, higher than Mars or HHH) comes in at the four spot. He’s an elite goal scorer, whom I believe has a higher ceiling than the one he is at right now. His 22 goals don’t do him justice. He’s an elite goal scorer and will prove that in the VHL. Anytime a player comes into a draft with this high of a scoring rating, GMs will time and time again take a chance on the talent and ignore the numbers.

:que:3) Vancouver Wolves (24-26-5)

         C Maximilian Kirbsson, Houston Bulls

        54 games played, 36 goals, 48 assists, 84 points

Hey, look! It’s a center! Our first in the draft. Kirbsson, along with his Bulls teammate Jurri, is a can’t miss prospect. He only got the nod over him due to his position being center. Teams love to build around a young centreman. Kirbsson has great vision and is everything you could ask for in a center. Responsible in his own end, playmaker, etc. He’s a five-tool player. Draft with confidence, VHL GMs.

:cal:2) Calgary Wranglers (20-32-3)

         LW Shane Mars, Minnesota Storm

         54 games played, 38 goals, 39 assists, 77 points

These next two players are pretty much as much of a lock as you can get. Mars and HHH each are going to be well over 300 total TPE come draft time and basically be ready to step right into big roles. Some GMs are surprised by Mars not scoring as many points as his rival HHH, but I chalk it up to him playing with so much talent in Minnesota. There are only so many points to go around, and Mars is just a victim of this. His tremendous goal scoring, skating and puck handling makes him a sure-fire lock for #2.

:mos:1) Moscow Menace (7-42-6)

         C Hunter Hearst Helmsley

         54 games played, 46 goals, 55 assists, 101 points

6’3. 250 pounds. 49 years old? Well, that’s about his only fault. This player could be one of the greatest in VHLM history, so it’s no surprise the fans in Moscow are already sporting his namesake on their jerseys. He could score 140 points and I don’t think anyone would be surprised. He’s got it all. Great scoring ability, some passing to back that up, you name it and he’s got it! Also, he’s by far the best faceoff man in the draft, as if the two points per game wasn’t enough to have him picked 1st. The expansion Menace will finally get their hero, as HHH rides to town and helps to soften the blow of what has been a so far awful season.
